Résumé:
Since 1995, Dhaka-based architecture firm Kashef Chowdhury / URBANA has produced an astonishing collection of works of divergent scales, typologies, and contexts located in one of the most meteorologically challenging regions in the world. A hospital introduced into an economy decimated by rising oceans, a shelter against cyclones in Bangladesh’s southern coastal region, and architectural interventions in one of the world’s densest metropolitan areas: Kashef Chowdhury / URBANA’s designs are incisive, critical responses to varied issues and urgencies rooted in the belief that architecture must be a reflection of, and sympathetic to, increasingly fragile ecological conditions. ''Meditations in Entropy'' is the first full monograph on the work of Kashef Chowdhury / URBANA. It features 18 of the firm’s realized designs in detail through photographs by acclaimed architectural photographer Hélène Binet as well as numerous plans, drawings, sketches, and other images. Perceptive essays are contributed by the distinguished critics and historians Kenneth Frampton, Robert McCarter, William J. R. Curtis, and Philip Ursprung, and by Ainun Nishat, a renowned water resource and climate change specialist. An illustrated catalogue of Kashef Chowdhury / URBANA’s projects and realized buildings rounds off this beautifully designed volume.

Résumé:
Influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as Paolo Soleri, Bruce Goff and Gunnar Birkerts, Bruder opened his own design studio in 1974. His self-built house/studio on the desert edge of Phoenix garnered a Record Houses of 1977 design award. A Fellowship in Architecture at the American Academy in Rome was a career turning-point permitting several months of intense reflection from a studio overlooking Rome, and travel throughout Europe to study historic and contemporary architecture. Filled with fresh perspective, Bruder won the commission to design the 280,000 square foot Phoenix Central Library. It opened in 1995. Cultural, civic and private commissions followed, as did opportunities to travel, lecture, and teach.

The evolution of modern architecture has been inextricably entangled in issues of politics, nationalism, and the environment, creating a tension between local context and global development that is unresolved to this day. In this context, few writers have exerted as much influence on architectural theory and practice as Kenneth Frampton. In this illustrated volume, twenty-nine contributors from around the world amplify and pay tribute to his writing and thought. Intended for all those concerned with the built environment, this book offers further evidence of how this scholar, humanist, and teacher has shaped our understanding of the working reality of the architect. The premise of "Modern architecture and the lifeworld" is rooted in Frampton’s understanding of how architecture must engage with both cultural and constructional imperatives; and it addresses strategies for grappling with contemporary concerns such as regional identity amidst urban globalization, and tectonic culture and landform in the construction of place.

Résumé:
The Clyfford Still Museum was designed by the leading architectural practice Allied Works and its founder, Brad Cloepfil. The building creates space for the voice and artistic vision of American painter Clyfford Still (1904–1980), housing the vast majority of his creative output over a sixty-year period. The museum’s design is inspired by the work of Still and by its monumental context: the site is located at the intersection of prairie and mountains, within an urban district of major cultural buildings, vacant lots, historic housing, and new development. The building looks to the earth as a source of silence and profound connection to the elemental forces the artist explored through his painting. This publication presents the vision and realization of the museum from initial concepts to completion. A rich collection of stories, artifacts, documents, and conversations trace the evolution of the building and Allied Works’ unique creative process. New essays and photography examine its significance within contemporary architectural discourse and the singular experience of the completed work.
