Résumé:
We all know the role of public parks in the health and vitality of a major city: they provide space for recreation, help reduce the impact of harmful greenhouse gas emissions, and absorb runoff from heavy thaws or storms. Parks also help make a city more equal: they provide greenery, amenities, and spaces to socialize to all people, regardless of income or status. But in a quickly intensifying city with soaring property values, Toronto is hard-pressed to create the parkland necessary to accommodate the needs of a growing population. Our contributors explore these themes in our 20-page cover section. You’ll also find engaging articles on the neurological reasons why we respond to certain architecture styles, how purpose-built apartments after World War I opened up independent city-living for women, where all of the building permits have been issued in the city over the last 20 years, why local comic artists are using Toronto as the setting in their stories, and how Mayor John Tory has made four horrible decisions that Torontonians will have to live with for generations.

While Expo 67 is considered one of the seminal moments in Canada’s history, the site had sadly become a wasteland. David Leonard explores the slow decay of this historic site. Graphic artist David Kopulos profiles over 40 projects inspired by Canada’s Centennial celebrations. Hogan’s Alley was a small neighbourhood home to Vancouver’s historic Black community. Then the downtown viaducts came and changed everything. John Lorinc looks at how Canadian cities are finally waking up to the second coming of the automobile revolution. The summer inundation of rain on the Toronto Islands has been a shocking reminder of their vulnerability. Cartographer James Steenberg examines the high-water marks of the floods.

Résumé:
The winter 2018 edition of Spacing takes a swing at sports and how local athletics have shaped neighbourhoods, transportation planning, and Toronto’s narrative. Our contributors examine a variety of topic such as the spectacular local rise of lucha libre, how to accommodate the rise of new sports on old athletic facilities (cricket, bike polo), and how the City plans traffic management during major sporting events. Other features tackled in the magazine include the changing nature of street trees, the rise of punk venues in 1980s Toronto, how the city worked with youth gangs in the 1940s, and the search for the fabled “Toronto House” painted by Group of Seven artist Lawren Harris.
