Résumé:
This issue features work by the winners of the 2019 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers. The competition theme, Just, investigated the exigencies of the just in contemporary architecture. In the words of the League Prize Committee’s theme statement, entrants explored “the implicit tensions between architecture’s affinity for the just so in materials, tectonics, and organization, and a call to act justly.” Amid escalating demands for justice and renewed focus on the ethics of architecture, the winners’ work exemplifies the diverse ways young architects and designers are both constructing and complicating the practice and theory of just design.

Résumé:
The Architectural League Prize is an annual competition, series of lectures, and exhibition organised by the Architectural League and its Young Architects and Designers Committee. The League Prize was established to recognise specific works of high quality and to encourage the exchange of ideas among young people who might otherwise not have a forum. Participants in the program are chosen through a portfolio competition that is juried by distinguished architects, artists and critics, and the Young Architects and Designers Committee. The committee, a group selected each year from past winners of the League Prize, is responsible for developing the program's theme and selecting competition jurors. Open to designers ten years or less out of school, the competition draws entrants from around North America. The lecture series and exhibition by winners of the competition provide a lively public forum for the discussion of their work and ideas.

Résumé:
Young architects often stand out more for their design approach than their realized work. This year's theme, Range, echoes the committee's perception of young architects' careers as explorations of the discipline's boundaries. Architects were challenged to demonstrate how the range they operate within evolves as they encounter the perceived limits of the profession. Competition entries reflect a diversity of approaches from formal treatments and construction to material experimentation and applications.
