Edward Ford's forty years of practicing and teaching architecture have focused on one area: the architectural detail. Yet, despite two influential books, numerous articles, and lectures given from Vancouver to Vienna, there is one question Ford has never answered: 'What is a detail?' Ford walks the reader through five widely accepted and wildly different definitions of detail, in an attempt to find, for once and for all, the quintessential definition of detail in architecture. After shuffling through the history of architecture, he finally reaches a conclusion.

Résumé:
For almost 20 years, Detlef Mertins has been a critical voice in renewing our understanding of architectural modernity. Architect, historian, professor, his essays have often taken up familiar themes in order to redress inaccuracies and release energies that we were unaware of. These essays elaborate on such key modernist tropes as transparency, glass architecture, organicism, life and event, sameness and difference. Previously published in a variety of different venues, from journals to anthologies – including such noted books as Lars Spuybroek's NOX: Machining Architecture and FOA's Phylogenesis – they are now assembled for the first time in this volume.

Résumé:
Given today's multitude of demands on the built environment, the role of the architect has extended from being a mere designer and builder to acting as a mediator within a much larger network of expertise. This mediation takes place on multiple levels – within the building industry, between public, clients and designers, and between public, clients and designers, and between the actual design and its environment. To achieve this, the field of work, the tools of design and the representation of architects needs to develop. The architect has to design the design process itself. Mediating Architecture demonstrates the extended role of the architect through the applied work of AA's Diploma Unit 14 within London's Thames Gateway over three consecutive years. A series of essays reflect this methodology from the multi-disciplinary perspectives of architecture, urban design, landscape design and philosophy.

Résumé:
Danish artist Asger Jorn (1914-1973) is internationally renowned for his activities within the CoBrA and the International Situationist groups. Quite apart from his paintings, prints, ceramics and sculptures, Jorn produced a remarkable amount of theoretical work. His ideas are still extremely relevant to contemporary discourse. However, in contrast to his artistic oeuvre, Jorn's theoretical arguments have received much less attention from scholars of architecture, art history or philosophy. This book for the first time reveals this largely ignored aspect of Jorn's work. Jorn's opinions and motivations are subsequently contextualized within the theoretical debate of his time and are linked in the book to examples of built architecture, which influenced and informed his conception of architecture and urbanism.
