This book introduces to an English-language audience the writings of the so-called New Vienna School of art history. In the 1930s Hans Sedlmayr (1896-1984) and Otto Pächt (1902-1988) undertook an ambitious extension of the formalist art historical project of Alois Riegl (1858-1905). Sedlmayr and Pächt began with an aestheticist conception of the autonomy and irreducibility of the artistic process. At the same time they believed they could read entire cultures and worldviews in the work of art. The key to this contextualist alchemy was the concept of "structure," a kind of deep formal property that the work of art shared with the world. Sedlmayr and Pächt's project immediately caught the attention of thinkers like Walter Benjamin who were similarly impatient with traditional empiricist scholarship. But the new project had its dark side. Sedlmayr used art history as a vehicle for a sweeping critique of modernity that soon escalated into nationalist and outright fascist polemic, even while Pächt, a Jew, was forced into exile. Sedlmayr and the whole scholarly project of Strukturanalyse were sharply repudiated by Meyer Schapiro and later Ernst Gombrich. After an introductory essay, the book opens with two selections from Riegl. The next section includes two essays by Sedlmayr, two by Pächt, and one each by Guido Kaschnitz-Weinberg and Fritz Novotny, all dating from the 1930s. The book closes with the divergent responses of Benjamin (1933) and Schapiro (1936). The difference of opinion between these two key voices raises again the question of the legitimacy and effectiveness of the method, and reveals the analogies between the New Vienna School project and the antiempiricist cultural histories of our own time. The book also contains an extensive bibliography.

In the discussion of architecture, the prevailing sentiment of the past three decades has been that cultural production can no longer be understood to arise spontaneously, as a matter of social course, but is constructed through ever more self-conscious theoretical procedures. The development of interpretive modes of various stripes--poststructuralist, Marxian, phenomenological, psychoanalytic, as well as others dissenting or eccentric--has given scholars a range of tools for rethinking architecture in relation to other fields and for reasserting architecture's general importance in intellectual discourse. This long-awaited anthology is in some sense a sequel to Joan Ockman's "Architecture Culture 1943-1968, A Documentary Anthology" (1993). It presents forty-seven of the primary texts of contemporary architecture theory, introducing each by detailing the concepts and categories necessary for its understanding and evaluation. It also presents twelve documents of projects or events that had major theoretical repercussions for the period. Several of the essays appear here in English for the first time.

Critical theories such as those of the Frankfurt School of the twenties and thirties gave rise to a complex and sophisticated critique of modernity and modernism. The history and theory of twentieth-century architecture, which developed rather independently of this rich tradition, appear naive and unbalanced in comparison. In this exploration of the relationship between modernity, dwelling, and architecture, Hilde Heynen attempts to bridge this gap between the discourse of the modern movement and cultural theories of modernity. On one hand, she discusses architecture from the perspective of critical theory, and on the other she modifies positions within critical theory by linking them with architecture. She assesses architecture as a cultural field that structures daily life and that embodies major contradictions inherent in modernity, arguing that architecture nonetheless has a certain capacity to adopt a critical stance vis-à-vis modernity. "Ideas, faces and places" is a record of an exhibition and symposium that took place in Dublin at The Irish Architectural Archive in the autumn of 2022, "Sweet Disorder and the Carefully Careless: Ideas, Faces and Places", which transferred to RIBA headquarters in London in the Spring of 2023. The book is a repository for some of the observations that arose at these events made by architects and critics including John Tuomey, Ed Jones, Irina Davidovici, Kenneth Frampton and others. The exhibition juxtaposed Celia Scott’s busts of the architects James Stirling, Leon Krier, Alan Colquhoun, Ed Jones and others, with a pictorial biography of her husband, the eminent architect and academic Robert Maxwell (1922-2020). The view that this book offers of the exhibition and of the work of Scott and Maxwell is provisional and partial, offering the reader the chance to meander and to relish unexpected juxtapositions and oblique views of its subjects - almost exactly like the rooms that Celia Scott created in Dublin and in London. Robert Maxwell was one of the most important architectural theorists and teachers of the second half of the 20th century - this book is an essential addition to his oeuvre.

Manuscrit retrouvé récemment dans la bibliothèque personnelle de la résidence secondaire d'Henri Lefebvre à Saragosse, Vers une architecture de la jouissance interroge les différentes formes de jouissance que l'architecture contemporaine revêt. Terme difficilement traduisible, la jouissance dont parle Henri Lefebvre dans ce texte oscille entre le plaisir, la sensualité, la volupté, le délice, le bien-être. Elle devient ici la redécouverte d'un corps architectural à la mesure de la sensualité du corps de l'homme. Mais elle est surtout le rejet de l'ascétisme au sens où Nietzsche en parle dans le Zarathoustra quand il en fait l'expédient du prêtre qui assèche la vie en refusant toute légèreté. L'ouvrage réinterroge ainsi le principe d'habitation sur lequel Henri Lefebvre à travaillé tout au long de sa carrière. Professeur de sociologie à l'Université de Nanterre de 1965 à 1973, il a marqué toute une génération de sociologues, d'architectes et d'urbanistes. « Le Droit à la ville » de 1968 et « La Production de l'espace » de 1974 sont les piliers de son questionnement sur l'habitabilité de notre espace à vivre.
