Résumé:
This new monograph celebrating 40 years of practice by David Chipperfield Architects is published in double-volume format and covers a cross section of both built and unbuilt work. The monograph highlights several activities led by British Pritzker Prize Laureate Sir David Chipperfield (born 1953) throughout his career. In 1985 he established David Chipperfield Architects, which grew into a global practice with offices in London, Berlin, Milan, Shanghai and Santiago de Compostel. Around 100 design entries are accompanied by 10 critical essays and a series of articles that have been published over the years by various commentators, including Joseph Rykwert and Barry Bergdoll. Richly illustrated, both volumes feature contributions by renowned visual artists such as Candida Höfer, Thomas Struth and Friederike von Rauch. The monograph is edited by Rik Nys and designed by John Morgan Studio.

Celebrated as one of the most innovative and daring architects of the twentieth century, Bruce Goff (1904–1982) imagined a truly independent modern American architecture throughout his six-decade-long career, which began when he was just twelve years old, working as an apprentice at an architectural firm in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Distinguishing himself from the restrained modernism of the postwar period, Goff created single-family homes that were at once livable and adventurous, featuring radical spatial relationships, and designed fantastical large-scale commercial and industrial spaces. His architectural legacy often overshadows his equally experimental artistic career; this book explores the full sweep of Goff’s creativity, which flowed between media and artistic practices. It highlights 150 objects, including architectural drawings and models; abstract paintings; and photographs, ephemera, and building fragments. Inspired by a range of cultural and artistic traditions, from Native American art to Japanese joinery and the landscapes of science fiction, Goff’s work represents a unique synthesis of diverse influences.

Résumé:
In 1891, James Beale, a wealthy, middle-class Unitarian solicitor from Birmingham, commissioned architect Philip Webb to design a holiday home in the Sussex countryside. The Beale family remained sole owners of the property until Helen Beale, James and Margaret Beale’s last surviving child, bequeathed the estate to the National Trust in 1972. Although Standen is recognised by architectural historians as a fine and complete example of Philip Webb’s Arts and Crafts architecture of the period and is widely celebrated for its Morris & Co. wallpapers and furnishings, little has been written about how the family experienced the house, garden and estate, and the extent to which this shaped Standen’s later life under the National Trust. This book fills the void, focusing on the Beales’ lived experience and how they collaborated with Philip Webb in the creation of Standen.

Résumé:
Following the acclaimed first volume in Tadao Ando’s monograph series with Phaidon, "Tadao Ando: The Colours of Light" (1996), this new volume showcases the continual collaboration between Ando and photographer Richard Pare. Beginning with the Pulitzer Arts Foundation in St. Louis, Missouri, and concluding with the Bourse de Commerce project, located in Paris, the book features Pare’s stunning photographs of 28 contemporary projects in locations around the world, including Japan, Germany, Mexico, South Korea, Italy, and the United States. Pare’s images, most of which have never been published, expertly capture Ando’s quietly powerful approach to architectural design. Created in close collaboration with Ando and his studio, Light and Space opens with a foreword by the architect, an introduction by architect Dominique Perrault, and four original drawings Ando created specifically for this book, printed on thin tissue paper.

Résumé:
"Dirty Old River" brings together twelve essays penned by Tom Emerson over the past two decades. Written on very different occasions as contributions to books or articles in magazines, they explore a wide range of topics through the lens of architecture. The book’s title is borrowed from the British rock band The Kinks’ cult song “Waterloo Sunset” to symbolize a journey through the interweaving of culture, imagination, and the built environment. Naturally, Emerson writes about architecture: how it is designed, drawn, and built. Yet he also turns his attention to other, wider fields, from the transformation of materials to the nuances of human creativity, the explosive early works of his celebrated fellow architect Frank O. Gehry, and the intimate craftsmanship behind the literary spaces of French writer Georges Perec.

Résumé:
The third installment in the Dongola Architecture Series, "Provoking the territory: Bernard Khoury", explores the provocative and often polarizing practice of Lebanese architect Bernard Khoury through an intimate lens rooted in Beirut. As with previous volumes, the series privileges critical conversations over monographic celebration—this edition not only follows Khoury’s trajectory from student to self-reinvention in his fifties, but also presents him as both a product and provocateur of the city’s contradictions. This volume uses Khoury’s work not simply as an archive of built projects, but as an investigative framework for understanding Beirut’s urban complexities. It asks: how can an architect simultaneously challenge power and profit from it? Can one critically portray a city while being embedded in its elite networks? Following the structure of earlier volumes, "Provoking the territory" mobilizes Khoury’s thinking as a lens to reflect on regional failures to modernize, unlearn dominant fictions, and dive fearlessly into the architectural imaginaries of the Arab world. It is an invitation to confront the ethics, politics, and aesthetics of urban storytelling.

This publication is based on an illustrated talk presented by architect and historian Fernanda Canales in June 2024 at the Vitra Design Museum as part of the Barragán Lecture series. It focuses on the Mexican architect Luis Barragán (1902–88), whose work occupies a permanent place in the canon of 20th-century architecture and continues to fascinate architectural scholars, connoisseurs and enthusiasts. Barragán strove for an "emotional architecture," claiming that "any work of architecture which does not express serenity is a mistake." He used raw materials such as stone or wood, and his preference for hidden light sources gives his interiors a particularly subtle and lyrical atmosphere. In her lecture, Canales deftly interweaves Barragán's biography with his major built works, which are characterized by a skillful approach to spatial and chromatic atmospheres and environments.
