Résumé:
Following the 1968 earthquake in Sicily, plans were produced for the total reconstruction of the destroyed town of Gibellina, inspired by the models of the English New Towns. After an initial phase in which international architects and artists participated in the urban redesign, in the late 1970s a series of seminars and workshops was held at the University of Palermo to take stock of the reconstruction. Oswald Mathias Ungers (1926–2007) was then called to design the town’s central area, which was still undefined. His Civic Centre proposal reflected on the relationship between built and public space, and between city, monument, and history. Ultimately, however, little was realized.

Résumé:
This book was created with the utmost effort, dedication, and profound rigour, providing as much information as possible so that every reader can evaluate the project with full knowledge of the facts. On our part, we aimed to raise all the questions that readers might wish to ask about the architectural project, and Kengo Kuma generously and patiently answered them all. The publication contains three remarkable interviews. The architect Kengo Kuma, the author of the project, in the text he wrote for the book and in his interview, reveals his respect for Portugal through unusually strong words. The interview is not an easy one but once again emphasises and reveals the tribute he paid to that country, the respect he holds for it, and his clear intention to build bridges of friendship between Portugal and Japan.

Between 2010 and 2020, Caruso St John expanded its reputation for sensitive and characterful architecture through a remarkable range of projects. Major buildings in the heart of Swiss, German, and Belgian cities explored the role urban landmarks can play in the present day, while smaller domestic projects provided the opportunity for experiments in restoration, materials, and colour. Transforming buildings for reuse – from beloved public institutions to longabandoned industrial sites – became a focal point for the practice as it sought to emphasise its work with the existing rather than contribute to the escalating production of new construction. Their designs for memorials, exhibitions, and museums further developed this engagement with memory and an aliveness to the past.

Résumé:
The second volume in an anthology on Tsuyoshi Tane’s evolving architectural practice. Featuring seventeen recent projects, including major commissions currently underway, such as the New Main Building of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo and the Sensoji Temple Treasure Museum, it highlights his ongoing investigation into “archaeological thinking”, a design approach rooted in uncovering memory, place, and the deep layers of history that shape the built environment. Each project thus emerges from extensive research: archival, material, cultural, spatial. Through sketches, studies, and project narratives, it reveals how ideas are patiently excavated and woven into architectural forms.

Résumé:
Alvar Aalto's work is strongly influenced by his experience of nature – especially in the deep forests of his Finnish homeland. But he also visited the sites of antiquity on several trips to the Mediterranean and the Orient. This book explores the dominant theme of nature in Aalto's work in a variety of ways. Interestingly enough, it is little known that he also worked as a landscape architect and created the garden for Villa Mairea together with the architecture as a ''Gesamtkunstwerk''. Richly illustrated essays describe for example Aalto's garden art and the influences of the Mediterranean landscape on Elissa, Aino and Alvar Aalto. The wonderful photographs by Elina Brotherus, mostly taken especially for this book, show Aalto's typical intertwining of interior and exterior spaces and convey the magic of the Finnish landscape.

Résumé:
“Memoryscapes,” the second volume in the “Architecture Connecting” series, co-published with the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, examines the role of human narratives in shaping the spaces of tomorrow. Focusing on the intersections of architecture with anthropology, archaeology and geology, the book presents the work of two studios whose practices engage deeply with the past through both broad investigative research and precise architectural responses. Bound back-to-back, the publication comprises two volumes presenting the distinct approaches of DnA Architecture and Design (Beijing) and Atelier Tsuyoshi Tane Architects (ATTA, Tokyo and Paris). DnA’s practice of “architectural acupuncture” focuses on the social and economic regeneration of rural Chinese communities through targeted interventions that revive long-standing cultural practices, while ATTA’s “Archaeology of the Future” draws on the layered memories of places to create future possibilities across architecture, urban planning and exhibition design, in an international context. Led by Xu Tiantian and Tsuyoshi Tane, respectively, the two studios share an approach that connects social traditions, cultural heritage, craftsmanship and production conditions within complex, site-specific frameworks. Through illustrated essays and project dossiers, the publication traces how these practices draw on lived histories and place-based knowledge to generate new architectural narratives, bridging the past and the future in response to contemporary needs.
