Résumé:
Born in Estonia in 1901, Louis Isidore Kahn was to become one of the United States’ most important architects of the post-war period, alongside the Modern masters Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier. Although renowned for a number of seminal modern works, he came to question many of the precepts of the Modern Movement. In particular, he questioned the ability of the International Style of Modernism to house the social spaces required by the latter half of the century. In 1947 Kahn was appointed Professor at Yale University. He was to continue teaching throughout his architectural career, influencing a younger generation of architects along the way. His teaching enabled him to further develop his own concepts and to inform his ever-evolving definition of design. He was drawn to investigate monumentality in architecture, creating buildings out of heavy, solid materials and forms and incorporating vivid plays of light, in complete contrast to the lightweight glass and steel structures being created elsewhere by his peers. This monumentality was also imbued with his concern for the ritual of human experience. His career, although extending to just over twenty years, was a rich and varied one, where he continually readdressed the issues of light, mass, structure, monumentality, geometry and materials. This monograph follows a predominantly chronological order, identifying major themes and examining key works according to these themes. A comprehensive list of projects by Kahn spanning his lifetime and drawn from the Louis I Kahn Collection at the University of Pennsylvania Archives is also included, listing over 231 projects, of which at least 30 were previously unattributed.

Résumé:
Based in Japan and one of an emerging generation of young, world-class architects, Shigeru Ban designs and builds graceful, serene structures using modest materials such as cardboard, paper tubes, bamboo, and prefabricated wood. His buildings are sometimes soaring and birdlike, sometimes simple, grounded, and evocative of the Japanese aesthetic, but always they are integrated with and respectful of their surrounding environment. Ban has designed projects at both ends of the client spectrum: from one-room temporary houses of paper tubes for earthquake refugees worldwide to a 14,000 square-foot country house in Sharon, Connecticut – his first U.S. commission. His humanitarian efforts and his interest in recyclable, affordable, natural materials have won praise and attention from museums and critics in America and Europe. Ban’s Curtain Wall House was a favorite entry in the Museum of Modern Art’s “Un-Private House” exhibition in 1999; he has gone on to design a museum for children in Japan, a canal museum in France, and a private art museum in Belgium; he was included in the 2000 and 2002 Venice Biennale, and created the Japan Pavilion for the Expo 2000 in Hannover, Germany. He was a member of the Think team of architects selected in February 2003 as one of two finalist teams to compete for the commission to design the new World Trade Center site in New York.

Résumé:
This detailed examination of I. M. Pei's new wing of the German Historical Museum in Berlin was published to coincide with the unveiling of the extension in 2003. The glass building, with its triangular footprint and seemingly weightless curved staircase, offers a striking departure from the museum's older structures, and plays an important role in Berlin's current architectural and cultural renaissance. Essays from architectural scholars comment on Pei's design, provide a history of the Arsenal building and site, and place the Show House in context with the architect's other important museum structures, including those built for the National Art Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the legendary Glass Pyramid in the courtyard of the Louvre.

The book spans Murcutt's entire career, from the early modernist houses to his most recent commissions in the 21st century, identifies recurring themes in his work and analyses how his buildings 'marry modern architecture to the place, the territory, the landcape' to arrive at an ecological functionalism. The buildings themselves are an eclectic selection ranging from Murcutt's courtyard houses in Sydney to free-standing residences set in Australia's barren and isolated landscapes. The full-colour photography, much of it supplied from the architect's own private collection, testifies to the aesthetic appeal of the buildings, while Murcutt's line drawings and plans lend further insight into his work.

Résumé:
The first of a unique series of translations of Scamozzi's L'Idea della Architettura Universale. The northern Italian architect, Vincenzo Scamozzi, (1548-1616) designed a number of important palaces, villas and churches in and around Vicenza, Padua and Venice. In addition, he completed a comprehensive study of ancient classical architecture. including the possibilities for its application in a modern context. The first edition of the book was published in 1615. Scamozzi distinguishes himself from his predecessors Vitruvius and Palladio by the scientific approach he follows in his treatise, in which his own designs appear as examples. The clear and detailed account of the historical and geographical background to the principles of classical architecture led to the book's wide popularity in the Northern Netherlands throughout the 17th century. Scamozzi's text was regarded as the most suitable manual for mastering the rules of building, and his theories had a considerable impact upon classical architecture in the Dutch Golden Age.
