Les grands créateurs d'œuvres, qu'elles soient artistiques, architecturales ou musicales, ont compris le principe de la présence de l'absence : en le réduisant à l'essentiel, l'objet créé gagne en clarté, en qualité et en force. Cette pensée se retrouve à travers divers pays et cultures. Bien que de nombreux ouvrages aient été consacrés à des sujets équivalents - tels que la communauté Shaker, le nomadisme bédouin et l'architecture cistercienne - aucun livre, jusqu'à présent, n'a réuni tous les aspects de ce thème. -John Pawson
