Résumé:
The work of MVRDV can be considered an emblematic turning point in Dutch architecture. Early projects such as the Light Urbanism study for the Municipality of Rotterdam, the headquarters for Public Broadcasting Company VPRO and housing for elderly Wozoco's in Amsterdam brought MVRDV to the attention of a wide field of clients and gave them international acclaim. What stands out as the characteristic feature of MVRDV is an adherence to reality and the need to strip the eye of preconceived ideas. The operational methodology that stems from this is centered around the application of the "technique" of the datascape, based on extensive and generalized research that tends to assemble an enormous quantity of information so as to proceed to the project phase in a rational, objective manner. This book examines the distinctive features of MVRDV's work and shows the full range of their achievements.

Résumé:
Adolf Loos (1870-1933) was a Viennese architect known for his radical building facades. Author Ralf Bock reveals the sensuality of Loos's interior designs, demonstrating that Loos was not an architect of the "white modern movement," but rather, he fought against it. A careful analysis of Loos's ideology and oeuvre, this book features 30 existing projects in 160 extraordinary full-color images by the celebrated French photographer Philippe Ruault, who has completely rephotographed Loos's works. These new images offer different interpretations of Loos' interiors and bring him back to the center of contemporary architectural debate. The color photographs are supplemented by archival photos from the Loos Archive of the Albertina, Vienna, and a completely new set of project drawings.

"What I was looking for with this house was probably a return to the main principles of modernism. I was trying to look for the very basics of architecture: a simple structure, simple construction methods, and straightforward spatial conditions that would satisfy the needs of our family. From an essay by Carlos Jimenez: "Since 1983, when work on my house and studio began, the project has undergone a variety of transformations, expansions, assimilations -simply put, it has followed a path of growth and discovery. My proximity to this path's every turn puts me much too close for objective appraisal, yet this position offers an auspicious vantage point from which to reflect on the implications of architecture in one's life. I now gather some observations, memories, and moments, all of which emerge through one biographical detail or another--an inevitable outcome when writing on such a personal work, a work that by its evolving nature is both my first and my most recent project."

Résumé:
From the swooping concrete vaults of the TWA Terminal at JFK Airport to the 630-foot-tall Gateway Arch in St. Louis, the iconic designs of Eero Saarinen (1910–1961) captured the aspirations and values of mid-20th-century America. Potent expressions of national power, these and other Saarinen-designed structures—including the GM Technical Center, Dulles International Airport, and John Deere headquarters—helped create the international image of the United States in the decades following World War II. Eero Saarinen: Shaping the Future offers a new and wide-ranging look at the entire scope of Saarinen’s career. This is the first book on Saarinen to incorporate significant research and materials from the newly available archives of his office, and includes the most complete portfolio of Saarinen's projects to date—a chronological survey of more than 100 built and unbuilt works, previously unpublished photographs, plans, and working drawings. Lavishly illustrated, this major study shows how Saarinen gave his structures an expressive dimension and helped introduce modern architecture to the mainstream of American practice. In his search for a richer and more varied modern architecture, Saarinen become one of the most prolific and controversial practitioners of his time.
