Résumé:
Carol Bishop made a pilgrimage across the United States in search of a way to express her deep connection to the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. Her experience of Wright's architecture transcended a mere understanding of his design philosophy. In "Frank Lloyd Wright: The Romantic Spirit" Carol Bishop's paintings and photographs capture both the radiant energy and the ephemeral quality of Wright's architecture. Bishop's work also reveals how Wright's architecture inspires thoughts and feelings about the harmony between nature and humanity.

Résumé:
The new de Young museum in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park has been designed by the Swiss firm of Herzog & de Meuron. This book is a case study in design and urban planning, documenting the complex five-year process that has resulted in this outstanding contribution to contemporary museum architecture. Founded by San Francisco Chronicle publisher Michael de Young, the museum's permanent collection includes the art of Africa, Oceania and traditional cultures of the Americas; American painting and sculpture from the colonial period to the present; and both Western and non-Western textiles. After the museum was damaged in a 1989 earthquake, its fate became the focus of intense public debate, in which issues of environmental sensitivity and the role of cultural institutions in urban parks were paramount. Illustrated with colour photographs as well as plans, drawings and models, this book traces the architects’ creative process in detail. Principal photography by Mark Darley.

Résumé:
Le Corbusier is an icon of 20th-century architecture, his status a reflection of his capacity to endow architecture with an expression that evokes the spirit of the age. This book features some of Le Corbusier’s most important European buildings, complemented by others that are less well-known. The photographs, taken sequentially by the author, and an introduction that brings together the architect's main ideas about each building provide a unique 'walk through' of the master architect's great works. Each ‘walk through’ is accompanied by at least one floor plan, which pinpoints the position from which the photograph has been taken; phrases by Le Corbusier directly relating to what is shown in the image; drawings by the architect of certain details; and images from Le Corbusier buildings that enlarge on the discussion or elucidate a point.

Résumé:
Philadelphia architect Louis I. Kahn (1901–1974) was one of the most influential American architects of the twentieth century. His work, widely recognized as a link between modern and classical traditions, is distinguished by its simple yet monumental design. In this book, Thomas Leslie shows that Kahn was also an extraordinarily gifted technologist and that his careful presentation of engineering principles set the stage for the high-tech movement in Europe and America. The examination of four major buildings—the Yale Art Gallery, the Richards Medical Laboratories, the Salk Institute, and the Kimbell Art Museum—and several smaller projects by Kahn reveals this hidden theme : an expressive integration of construction, structure, and services into buildings that dramatically highlight the processes involved in their making and function. Previously unpublished drawings, construction photographs, and sketches complement new diagrams that illustrate the profound technical poetry within Kahn's buildings.

Résumé:
Robert A. M. Stern is dedicated to the synthesis of tradition and innovation. In more than thirty-five years of practice, he has produced a wide range of building types with a variety of stylistic influences, all inspired by the great legacy of American architecture. His firm, Robert A. M. Stern architects, was first recognized for its distinguished houses, and residential design remains the cornerstone of the practice. This illustrated monograph-a companion to "Robert A. M. Stern: houses"- presents twenty-six of the firm's most memorable houses. Located in diverse settings across North America-from a valley in Colorado with views of the Aspen mountains to a bluff overlooking Long Island Sound to an island off the coast of British Columbia-these houses reveal the architect's emphasis on the importance of context and his dedication to exploring the nature of space. Each house invokes the vernacular architectural heritage particular to its region while reflecting its unique natural surroundings. Whether they are Shingle style "cottages" by the sea, colonial Georgian country estates, or elegant Regency designs, Stern's houses are unique both for their timelessness and their ability to evoke a conversation with the past-a dialogue he believes lies at the heart of architecture.

Résumé:
Wallace Neff may have been the preeminent architect of Spanish colonial-revival houses in Southern California. Neff was an inventive designer who was not only adept at manipulating traditional styles to please famous, wealthy clients like Cary Grant, Claudette Colbert, and Darryl Zanuck; he was also a pioneer in low-cost housing and pneumatic building. The Bubble House, as his best-known Airform structure was fondly nicknamed, had a social vision as compelling as that of any modernist housing project. "Wallace Neff and the grand houses of the golden state" tells the life story of this architect, who was raised as Southern California aristocracy - an heir to one of the founders of Rand McNally & Company -- and grew up to influence the course of architectural history in California. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white archival photographs that document Neff's family life and professional accomplishments, journalist Diane Kanner's compelling narrative offers a behind-the-scenes look at the development of residential architecture in Southern California.

Résumé:
Architect Stanley Saitowitz, based in San Francisco, is known for a practice that unites the qualities of early modern architecture with the construction techniques, materials, and urban and social attributes of the twenty-first century. Recurring themes in his work include the careful connection to time and place; the construction of spaces that allow fields of opportunity; the use of generative systems; the role of architecture as a support for human activity; and the visible trace of building techniques. This monograph, the first on Stanley Saitowitz office, presents fifty projects from more than thirty years of practice. The projects, divided by building type, are accompanied by a personal text in which Saitowitz plainly discusses his influences and interests. Landscape houses, often built on spectacular sites in Marin, Napa, and Sonoma, have evolved to include the noted "bar houses." Urban houses, while compact and dense, incorporate a sense of volume; similarly, multifamily housing provides indeterminate space to allow for personalization. Buildings for schools range from the riverside campus of the Oxbow School in Napa to the structurally innovative Building 23B at UCSF Mission Bay. Among the public landscapes is Mill Race Park in Columbus, Indiana, an assemblage of constructions specific to both place and function. Finally, Saitowitz has developed a series of designs that explore the formation of a Jewish architecture, notably synagogues in San Francisco and La Jolla and the Holocaust Memorial in Boston. Principal photography by Richard Barnes and Tim Griffith.
