Following the 1968 earthquake in Sicily, plans were produced for the total reconstruction of the destroyed town of Gibellina, inspired by the models of the English New Towns. After an initial phase in which international architects and artists participated in the urban redesign, in the late 1970s a series of seminars and workshops was held at the University of Palermo to take stock of the reconstruction. Oswald Mathias Ungers (1926–2007) was then called to design the town’s central area, which was still undefined. His Civic Centre proposal reflected on the relationship between built and public space, and between city, monument, and history. Ultimately, however, little was realized.

Résumé:
This book was created with the utmost effort, dedication, and profound rigour, providing as much information as possible so that every reader can evaluate the project with full knowledge of the facts. On our part, we aimed to raise all the questions that readers might wish to ask about the architectural project, and Kengo Kuma generously and patiently answered them all. The publication contains three remarkable interviews. The architect Kengo Kuma, the author of the project, in the text he wrote for the book and in his interview, reveals his respect for Portugal through unusually strong words. The interview is not an easy one but once again emphasises and reveals the tribute he paid to that country, the respect he holds for it, and his clear intention to build bridges of friendship between Portugal and Japan.

Résumé:
Between 2010 and 2020, Caruso St John expanded its reputation for sensitive and characterful architecture through a remarkable range of projects. Major buildings in the heart of Swiss, German, and Belgian cities explored the role urban landmarks can play in the present day, while smaller domestic projects provided the opportunity for experiments in restoration, materials, and colour. Transforming buildings for reuse – from beloved public institutions to longabandoned industrial sites – became a focal point for the practice as it sought to emphasise its work with the existing rather than contribute to the escalating production of new construction. Their designs for memorials, exhibitions, and museums further developed this engagement with memory and an aliveness to the past.

Résumé:
"The House of one" is a bold proposal by three local communities to build a house of prayer and learning for Jews, Christians, and Muslims in central Berlin. The design, which was the result of an international competition won by architects Kuehn Malvezzi in 2012, is to be built on the existing foundations of St. Petri Church, the first documented site in Berlin's history. The concept of the House of One is based on dialogue and an understanding of other faiths. As well as being a place of worship, it will be an educational center open to everyone. The sequence of spaces follows the principle of multiplicity within unity and heterogeneity within a single building. Although their rituals are different, coming together around a central hall in one building aspires to the universal.
