In their first comprehensive architectural monograph, the architects of DEMOGO explore the driving question of the importance of context for their architecture and invite designers and theorists to reflect with them on the relationship between contemporary spaces and complex contexts. Built and planned projects are presented in chronological order with specially produced drawings and models. The most remarkable buildings and contexts are captured through the eyes of renowned photographer Iwan Baan. The guest authors Petra Blaisse, Pippo Ciorra, Giovanni Corbellini, Sara Marini and Alberto Bertagna also shed light on central questions of DEMOGO's work and supplement the monograph with a variety of perspectives and personal reflections.

Résumé:
"Event-Cities 5" is the fifth and final volume in the MIT Press series documenting recent built and unbuilt projects by renowned architect Bernard Tschumi. This volume expands on the theoretical preoccupations that have shaped Tschumi's work in practice and pedagogy. In this volume, Tschumi embarks on what he calls a “poetics” that addresses both the rational elaboration of work and the irrational eruption of inexplicable elements in architectural projects. How do chance, intuition, and analogy, among other elements, intersect with the logical play of concept, context, and program to generate innovative and informed design? Highlights of this volume include circular building projects, works with suspended gardens and floating rectangular masses, superposed structures created via surrealist tactics, an immense educational research complex in France that hovers between building and urban design, a museum in China made from intersecting conic shapes, and a project for a cultural center in Italy that is structured as an investigation into courtyards and facades.

Résumé:
''Magic Architecture'' was the architect Frederick Kiesler’s most ambitious book project, an epoch-spanning history of human housing from prehistory to the atomic era, submitted to editors after World War II but left unpublished. In its holistic view of habitation through the lens of anthropology, ecology, and the life sciences, ''Magic Architecture'' is one of the most extraordinary texts on architecture written in the twentieth century, now at last published in the twenty-first. Kiesler’s exploration of the effects of modern technology in combination with the alternative epistemology of “magical” practices associated with cave drawings and the first artifacts of human industry reflects his profoundly interdisciplinary perspective on the development of art, architecture, and design. This critical edition preserves Kiesler’s conception of the book as a neo-Vitruvian treatise divided into ten parts that narrate an alternative history and theory of architecture. Also included are more than seventy composite plate illustrations consisting of images cut and pasted from books and popular science journals, with elaborate captions, as well as Kiesler’s own line drawings made specifically for this project. The editors have reassembled the book’s text and illustrations from archival documents, supplementing them with notes that trace the copious development of the work. Introductory essays provide an interpretation of key themes and bibliographic sources, as well as a chronological context of the architect’s research. Appendixes offer additional textual and visual material gathered by Kiesler for the project.

Résumé:
In "Albert Kahn Inc." Claire Zimmerman provides a history of second-wave industrialization associated with the growth and development of the United States auto industry and its global footprint. A forensic analysis of the "architects of Ford," the book theorizes how building and capitalism intersected in the case of twentieth-century industrial buildings, but also in other kinds of architecture and in the built environment writ large. Generally a marginal subject in histories of architecture, industrialism here exposes the expansionist modern project in Western architecture and culture, which was based on natural resource extraction and labor exploitation. With more than 140 full-color illustrations, the book combines an analysis of industrial architecture with compelling photographic evidence drawn from assorted archives.

Résumé:
The designer and architect Pierre Chareau (1883–1950) was a pivotal figure in modernism. His extraordinary Art Deco furniture is avidly collected and his visionary glass house, the Maison de Verre, is celebrated, but the breadth of his design genius has been little explored. Chareau linked architecture, fine arts, and style; designed furniture for avant-garde films and chic homes; collected artists such as Picasso and Mondrian; and was a radical innovator in the use of materials. This revealing look at the visionary French designer highlights his virtuosity and versatile creativity. Essays by leading scholars embrace the full scope of his invention, offering detailed analyses of individual projects, the interdisciplinary nature of his work, his Jewish background, his place in the avant-garde of Paris between the wars, and his more recent reception. Extensive illustrations present a rich sampling of Chareau’s furniture, architecture, interiors, fabrics, and wallpapers, as well as his own important art collection. Published in association with the Jewish Museum, New York

"Laboratorio de Vivienda" presents the 32 projects selected and built, including research, drawings, and descriptions by the architects. It considers the problem of low-income housing by bringing thoughtful attention and expertise of architects, considering how these proposals, assembled into a collective, would work together toward creating not an estate but a community for Apan, presenting a model of Housing as a Garden. In 2017, Mexico’s Institute for the National Fund for Workers’ (INFONAVIT) Center for Research for Sustainable Development launched a program to solicit new approaches to affordable housing. To better understand the possibilities, and to better educate developers, workers, and students about the research, INFONAVIT engaged with MOS to develop a master plan for a campus of 32 built prototypes and design an education center to promote awareness and study of workers’ housing typologies.

Résumé:
The work of Alison Brooks Architects fuses an endlessly inventive architectural imagination with profound sensitivity to the diverse cultural and natural histories that form each project’s provenance. This ethos underpins the extraordinary array of nuanced and joyful portfolio of works illustrated in this book, collectively described by Brooks as ‘experimental archetypes’. This 386-page monograph charts eighteen built works completed in the past 20 years, extensively documented with descriptive texts, photographs, drawings and emblematic construction details that illuminate each project’s tectonic and conceptual intent. The private houses in this book define Brooks’ early career and continue to be a test bed for experimentation. They illuminate her ability to conjure deeply human architectures of plasticity and informality. Organic geometries and expressive roof forms loosen cartesian boundaries to offer indeterminate spaces: these simultaneously act as a canvas for daily life, workplaces, or private art collections. As the practice’s work has grown in scale, their urban housing schemes have been motivated by Brooks’ foundational belief that the architect’s duty to the city, and society, is to provide beautiful, sustainable and accessible housing for all as a framework for individual and community well-being. This book reveals residential projects characterised by spatial generosity and a uniquely sculptural approach to form and material.

Résumé:
This new monograph from TC Cuadernos brings us closer to the recent work of Portuguese architect Nuno Brandão Costa, one of the most interesting contemporary voices in Portuguese architecture. This publication follows issue 90, which we released in 2009 featuring his early works, and now covers a period of intense creative activity and professional consolidation from 2010 to 2023. It is a meticulous journey through fifteen selected works that demonstrate the maturity reached by this architect over the last decade. The works span various typologies and scales, from single-family homes to large complexes. Projects such as the Campanhã Intermodal Terminal and the rehabilitation of the S. João de Deus neighborhood are studied with special attention, showing how Brandão Costa has expanded his field of action towards large-scale urban projects without losing the artisanal quality of the details that characterize his most intimate residential interventions. In all cases, his conceptual coherence, the harmonious relationship of his works with the landscape, and especially the masterful use of elementary geometries, refined volumes, and care for constructive details stand out.

Résumé:
This issue of TC Cuadernos is dedicated to the prolific career of Mexican architect Gabriela Carrillo. Through a careful selection of projects developed between 2014 and 2024, the monograph offers a comprehensive analysis of her architectural practice, covering her diverse collaborations and working methods. Throughout her career, Gabriela Carrillo has demonstrated a constant quest to generate spatial experiences that are dignified and sensitive to "otherness," and that respond to different users and contexts. Her work explores dialogues with natural or built preexistences, material experimentation and climatic adaptation, new forms, programs, and spatial sensibilities that push the boundaries of architecture. The monograph analyzes in detail his career, from his partnership with Mauricio Rocha to the opening of his own studio and the founding of Colectivo C733. It includes houses, markets, cultural centers, ephemeral works, landscaping, and the recovery of historical buildings. Each project is presented with images, plans, construction details, and drawings from the workbooks, offering an intimate look at his creative process.
