Résumé:
In the coming years, “Novartis Campus” is destined to fundamentally alter the appearance and character of the Novartis plant located in the Johan quarter of Basel Stadt – transforming the former production site into a centre of knowledge, innovation and encounter. Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani's master-plan envisages having particular buildings designed and constructed by invited architects. This monograph focuses on the first building in the Novartis Campus. Designed and built by Roger Diener, Helmut Federle and Gerold Wiederin, the impressive house has a glass facade with staggered coloured windowpanes and exquisite interiors. The different aspects of the building are highlighted by Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani, Martin Steinmann, Jan Thorn-Prikker and Ulrike Jehle-Schulte Strathaus. The volume also includes an essay by Christian Richters, illustrated by photographs, numerous plans and an inventory.

Claude-Nicolas Ledoux’s engraving "Coup d’oeil du théâtre Besançon" in which the architect’s building is seen reflected in the eye of a viewer, is the centre-piece in this intellectual archaeology. Rodolphe el-Khoury’s close reading of Ledoux’s celebrated icon excavates the foundations of architectural transparency, Modernism’s most potent and lasting invention, which is here traced back to an intellectual milieu that precedes the industrial revolution’s glass and steel building technology. The image becomes a site of entry into the culture of the eighteenth century--debates in public health, the political ideas of Rousseau, the philosophy of Condillac, the project of the Encyclopédie--yielding insights into important, philosophical, and architectural issues.

Résumé:
The Hans van Heeswijk architecture firm was founded in Amsterdam in 1985, and it has designed and realized a great variety of projects, among them offices, public buildings, museums, bridges, renovations, refurbishments, interiors and product design. Those projects are without exception matchlessly lucid and crafted to a standard rarely seen, particularly in an economy where tight budgets are the rule. Their forms, reticent at first, become articulate at close range. Each encounter with them seems right--thus the aura of tranquility, typical for buildings composed with great care and attention. This monograph deals with the works and ideas of Hans van Heeswijk architects over the last decade, including the recent commission for the refurbishment of the Hermitage Museum in Amsterdam.

Jakarta Megalopolis focuses on two projects in the title city by artist and architect Stani Michiels and artist Arjan van Helmond. Each grapples with Jakarta's housing culture, the experience of private as opposed to public space and the consequences of city migration, as well as the city's infrastructure, increasing density, and its coherence--or lack thereof--as a whole. As megalopolises in developing countries undergo explosive growth, their cultural, social, political and economic complexities are developing at unprecedented rates. That phenomenon is drawing more and more attention within the world of architecture and art, and Jakarta Megalopolis offers a case study of its complexities, a cutaway view of this chaotic new world.
