Common to all three is an expansive lot. And regardless of the length of our involvement, all of the projects are now underway. In repeatedly visiting the sites, one things we realized was that in one way or another they were all still in the process of being 'cultivated', while in the past, we might have used the word 'developed'. What exactly, then, is the difference betwee 'cultivating' and 'developing'? -Kazuhiro Kojima + Kazuko Akamatsu

Résumé:
No creature on earth is better at pretending than we humans. The title of this book is a way of saying that our daily life is nothing other than a show played out in our minds. We have a talent for creating a fantasy world. Luckily for us. He who is unable to daydream becomes hopelessly depressed. Our talent for simulating is so strong that we are even able to pretend that we exist. We simulate a first-person form, an ’I’. In The Great Pretender, kinetic artist Theo Jansen shows that the ’I’ we envision is a tool in our evolution. We need this tool to be selfish. There can be no selfishness without the I-fantasy. Since 1990 Theo Jansen has been engaged in creating new forms of life: beach animals. These are not made of protein like the existing life-forms but from another basic stuff, yellow plastic tubing. Skeletons made from these tubes are able to walk. They get their energy from the wind, so they don’t have to eat like regular animals. They evolved over many generations, becoming increasingly adept at surviving storms and and water from the sea. Theo Jansen’s ultimate wish is to release herds of these animals on the shore. In redoing the Creation, so to speak, he hopes to become wiser in his dealings with the existing nature by encountering problems the Real Creator had to face. The Great Pretender is a testimonial to his experiences as God. It’s not easy being God; there are plenty of disappointments along the way. But on the few occasions that things work out, being God is the most wonderful thing in the world. Includes a companiond DVD of beach animal videos.

Résumé:
London’s Foreign Office Architects are redefining the "shopping center" typology in Istanbul; rather than being an isolated world of consumption, cut off from its urban environment, their "Meydan" mall forms a public square in a new part of town, a place of meetings and encounters. The interior of the central European city, evolved over the centuries, is the role model for this new building. The publication documents Meydan’s development – from the international competition among firms such as BRT Architects, Chapman + Taylor and J.S.K. Architects to its construction – and describes the challenges of concept and design through reports and interviews. The developers of this project have taken on responsibility for urban planning and searched for possible answers to the problems affecting the megacity of Istanbul, in which public squares and green areas are few and far between. The resulting architecture blends into Istanbul’s cityscape in a very remarkable way.

Résumé:
Chicago's Krueck & Sexton Architects--designers of showrooms for Christie's and Herman Miller, the Joseph Cornell Galleries at The Art Institute of Chicago and many other industrial and residential projects nationwide--is internationally recognized as one of the most innovative and accomplished design firms practicing today. Founded in 1979, the firm has produced a body of work noted for its thoughtful and provocative explorations of the possibilities of Modernism. This volume focuses on an expansion of the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies, an 80-year-old Chicago institution that selected Krueck & Sexton to design a signature architectural statement about the nature of Jewish culture and learning. The result is a 150,000-square-foot unabashedly contemporary building on historic South Michigan Avenue, whose presence among traditional nineteenth-century masonry buildings both respects and challenges the notions of past and present. Light Study reveals the concepts and processes behind the design of this institution.

Résumé:
To open its Frontiers of Architecture series, Denmark's Louisiana Museum of Modern Art chose the engineer, innovative thinker and writer, Cecil Balmond, honoring him with an exhibition of projects past, present and future. This exhibition catalogue, covered in a clear vinyl slipcase, includes loose, abstract sketches, installation photographs and digital renderings of Balmond's various projects--exposing Balmond's varied sources of inspiration, thoughts, working methods and processes. For example, there is a section on his collaboration with the artist Anish Kapoor which documents the 2002 installation of a giant red gramophone-shaped fabric tube at Tate Modern in London. With his unconventional approach to structural engineering, Balmond is an indispensable sparring partner for some of the most challenging and innovative architects of our day, including Toyo Ito, Rem Koolhaas, Alvaro Siza and Daniel Libeskind.
