Résumé:
This book tells the remarkable story of a cartoonist who made his dream come true in a building made of brick, glass and wood. The well-known cartoonist Joost Swarte designed the new Toneelschuur theatre in the historic city centre of Haarlem completely in his own characteristic style. The Delft firm of architects Mecanoo elaborated his outline drawing and turned his sketch into a functional building. This book documents the unique and experimental project with sketches, drawings and photographs of the building, interior and many details. Henze Boekhout has recorded the new Toneelschuur theatre in a series of photographs, and Jan Tromp describes how the most beautiful theatre in the Netherlands was finally built after years of lobbying. Henk Döll provides a first-hand account of the unusual cooperation between artist and architect, and Paul Hefting writes on folly, play and utopian dreams, the elements that play a role in both Joost Swarte's drawings and the Toneelschuur theatre that has now materialised. The book is designed by Lex Reitsma.

Résumé:
Widely regarded as one of the most significant prophets of modern architecture, Adolf Loos (1870-1933) was known throughout Vienna as an outspoken, audacious dandy and moralist who defied the establishment. His work not only represented the beginning of modernism, with its stark, unornamented style, but also revolutionized architecture by introducing the concept of “spatial plan” architecture, which allowed for economizing space by designating rooms’ sizes and heights based on their purposes.

An example of the rehabilitation of disused buildings – Ortner & Ortner´s transformation of an industrial area in Zurich. The “Schiffbau” in Zurich is a disused industrial ship-building hall, now classified as a historical monument. Austrian architects Ortner & Ortner have skilfully transformed the original building to provide a base for the Zurich Schauspielhaus theatre, and to accommodate a range of cultural amenities. This publication chronicles the architectural processes whilst also considering the wider issues of transforming existing structures to take on new urban uses. Résumé:
Nature's blueprints are in a constant state of adaptation and transformation, reacting flexibly to varying conditions and changing influences. In this respect they are a perfect model for innovative planning processes in architecture. The result is extreme efficiency and the most beautiful designs under any given spatial and temporal conditions. This publication provides an introduction to a method of designing where the development and integration of advanced technology leads to a continual optimization of form and efficiency in the resulting architecture. Looking at five prominent projects, created in recent years by Petzinka Pink Architects, technical innovation, planning contexts and general lines of development are systematically presented and reflected upon. This book provides detailed insight into the work of one of Germany's most successful architectural offices, which became known for unusual projects such as the Berlin offices of the federal state North-Rhine Westphalia, the CDU's party headquarters in Berlin, the City Gate in Dusseldorf and the Century Hall in Bochum.

Résumé:
This book documents the comprehensive development of the project designed by Bernard Tschumi Urbanistes Architectes for the Exposition internationale 2004 in Paris / Seine St-Denis. The Expo will remain in a virtual state, since it was cancelled in August 2002. The design of the master plan, gates, bridges, pavilions, kiosks, and the agora, leads to an original project for a contemporary question: what would be, architecturally speaking, the image of the image, the theme of the theme of Expo 2004? This exploration of the real and the virtual is the major theme of the book.
