Résumé:
Modern Architecture is a landmark text - the first book in which this American architect put forth the principles of a fundamentally new, organic architecture that would reject the trappings of historical styles while avoiding the geometric abstraction of the machine aesthetic advocated by contemporary European modernists. One of the most important documents in the development of modern architecture and the career of Frank Lloyd Wright, "Modern Architecture" is a provocative and profound polemic against America's architectural eclecticism, commercial skyscrapers, and misguided urban planning. The book is also a work of savvy self-promotion, in which Wright not only advanced his own concept of an organic architecture but also framed it as having anticipated by decades - and bettered -what he saw as the reductive modernism of his European counterparts. Based on the 1931 original, for which Wright supplied the cover illustration, this edition includes a new introduction that puts "Modern Architecture" in its broader architectural, historical, and intellectual context for the first time. The subjects of these lively lectures -from "Machinery, Materials and Men" to "The Tyranny of the Skyscraper" and "The City" - move from a general statement of the conditions of modern culture to particular applications in the fields of architecture and urbanism at ever broadening scales. Wright's vision in "Modern Architecture" is ultimately to equate the truly modern with romanticism, imagination, beauty, and nature - all of which he connects with an underlying sense of American democratic freedom and individualism.

The mid-twentieth century was one of the most productive and inventive periods in Wright's career, producing such masterworks as the Guggenheim Museum, Price Tower, Fallingwater, the Usonian houses, and the Loveness House, as well as a vast array of innovative furniture and object design. With a variety of shapes and forms-ranging from honeycombs to spirals-this period is an important contribution to mid-century modernism. Mentoring such talents as Richard Neutra and Rudolph Schindler among others, Wright was one of the most influential proponents of the simplicity, democratic designs, and organic forms that characterize Mid-Century Modern. With lavish, new, previously unpublished color photographs and detailed plans, Frank Lloyd Wright: Mid-Century Modern is a comprehensive examination of an underserved period in Wright's career.

Pugin was one of Britain’s greatest architects and his short career one of the most dramatic in architectural history. Born in 1812, the son of the soi-disant Comte de Pugin, at 15 Pugin was working for King George IV at Windsor Castle. By the time he was 21 he had been shipwrecked, bankrupted and widowed. Nineteen years later he died, insane and disillusioned, having changed the face and the mind of British architecture. God’s Architect is the first full modern biography of this extraordinary figure. It draws on thousands of unpublished letters and drawings to recreate his life and work as architect, propagandist and romantic artist as well as the turbulent story of his three marriages, the bitterness of his last years and his sudden death at 40. It is the debut of a remarkable historian and biographer.

Résumé:
"Emerging Nature" documents the work of the Argentinian architect, graphic designer and industrial designer Emilio Ambasz. The publication discusses his projects ranging from buildings and urban gardens including green facade vertical gardens to exhibition designs and everyday objects. The comprehensive volume features essays by various experts, interviews, a wealth of color photographs and drawings. Ambasz’s main concern is to integrate nature and construction into architectural design, which is why he is regarded as one of the most important pioneers of Green Architecture. In his work a combination of landscape and architecture emerges, in which his respect for the environment and ecological sustainability becomes clear. A prime example of this is the Fukuoka Prefectural International Hall in Japan: a building that houses more than 100,000 m2 of exhibition spaces, theaters and offices is also an open green area in the form of a hanging garden.

Résumé:
"Wang Shu Amateur Architecture Studio" is the first major book on the recent work of architect Wang Shu, Pritzker Price winner in 2012, and his wife Lu Wenyu. Together they have run Amateur Architecture Studio, based in Hangzhou, China, for nearly 20 years. At a time when China’s explosive urbanization is making inroads into rural areas and leaving the marks of cheap concrete construction everywhere, Amateur Architecture Studio is keen to work against this tendency by reusing materials from the buildings that Chinese authorities are systematically tearing down. Amateur Architecture Studio’s working ways successfully represent socially conscious and sustainable new architecture. Wang Shu’s architecture reveals a thoughtful attitude toward both design and implementation, as well as the ability to react flexibly to the surroundings and history of a particular site. At heart, it comes down to preserving Chinese building customs and local awareness of material in a nation that is fast losing its building culture. The studio’s projects inhabit a fascinating field between allusions to traditional Chinese culture and large-scale modern architecture. This book is published on the occasion of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art exhibition in 2017 of Wang Shu and Amateur Architecture Studio’s work. Featuring a wealth of images by architecture photographer Iwan Baan this is a detailed and reflective guide to Amateur Architecture Studio’s projects, philosophy and methodology

Résumé:
From sprawling houses to compact bungalows and from world-famous museums to a still-working gas station, Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs can be found in nearly every corner of the country. While the renowned architect passed away more than fifty years ago, researchers and enthusiasts are still uncovering structures that should be attributed to him. William Allin Storrer is one of the experts leading this charge, and his definitive guide, The Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, has long been the resource of choice for anyone interested in Wright. Thanks to the work of Storrer and his colleagues at the Rediscovering Wright Project, thirty-seven new sites have recently been identified as the work of Wright. Together with more photos, updated and expanded entries, and a new essay on the evolution of Wright’s unparalleled architectural style, this new edition is the most comprehensive and authoritative catalog available. Organized chronologically, the catalog includes full-color photos, location information, and historical and architectural background for all of Wright’s extant structures in the United States and abroad, as well as entries for works that have been demolished over the years. A geographic listing makes it easy for traveling Wright fans to find nearby structures and a new key indicates whether a site is open to the public. Publishing for Wright’s sesquicentennial, this new edition will be a trusted companion for anyone embarking on their own journeys through the wonder and genius of Frank Lloyd Wright.
