Résumé:
This book brings together the most recent buildings and projects by the Mexican architect Alberto Kalach, with particular emphasis on the first steps of the process of each of these. As if it were a sort of log or sketch pad, the book sets out to highlight the essence of his ideas and the immediacy of his first few pencil strokes. Structured typologically, the tour through Kalach's work takes in single-family houses, apartment buildings, various designs for tower blocks and his famous project for the lake city (awarded a prize at the 2002 Venice Biennale), in which he proposes rehydrating the dried up aquiferous areas of Mexico City.

Résumé:
Situated in Chicago's famed Gold Coast, just north of the Magnificent Mile, the Charnley house is one of the finest dwellings in the city and considered worldwide to be a stunning example of avant-garde architecture. Now the headquarters of the Society of Architectural Historians and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998, the house was built in 1892 at a critical moment in urban and architectural history. "The Charnley House" is the first authoritative publication on the building, which has long been discussed in surveys but never before examined in detail. In this collection of original essays, six well-known architectural historians illuminate various aspects of the house, both inside and out, as they consider its remarkable formal and spatial qualities, its historical significance in the development of Chicago's elite residential neighborhood, and its place in the context of American domestic architecture. Equally important, the contributors tackle the knotty, decades-old issue concerning the building's designer. While many have ascribed the scheme to Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan's chief assistant at the time, this book sheds new light on how the house relates significantly to the work of both master and apprentice. The continuing debate over the house's "authorship" highlights the importance of the Charnley house in the history of modern architecture as the seminal work of residential design in the United States. These thoroughly researched interpretations, supplemented by an abundance of never before published illustrations, analyze this house of distinction with the care and detail it deserves. Beautifully restored in late 1980s, the Charnley house now has a book worthy of it.

The Scottish architect, designer and painter Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928) was one of the early pioneers of modern architecture and design. His multifaceted œuvre is an important link between the movement towards artistic reform in Britain and continental Modernism. Mackintosh’s avant-garde designs for the Glasgow school of art, the legendary Willow tea rooms or the Hill house in Helensburgh are a blend of functional simplicity and poetic decorative details. The result is a cool elegance which combines "mysticism and aestheticism with a strong touch of lilac ... and a gentle sensuality". In addition to his architectural works, this book focuses on Mackintosh’s famous interiors and also on his often neglected textile designs and watercolours.

Planned in 1930/31 in extremely difficult circumstances, it is a minor miracle that the Cité Internationale Universitaire Swiss halls of residence, when built, so closely resembled Le Corbusier's original innovative design. The Pavillon Suisse has accommodated Swiss students in Paris since it was opened in July 1933. This monograph is the result of years of dedicated research into every aspect of the building -- socio-political premises, planning, design and construction, the aesthetic and functional achievements it represents, and Le Corbusier's own renovations in 1948, 1953, and 1957.
