Résumé:
Based in Los Angeles, Tom Wiscombe heads an internationally recognised architecture practice, known for its powerful massing, graphic qualities, and tectonic inventiveness. His team’s approach stems from their theory of the flat ontology of architecture, which imagines architecture – and the world – as a set of discrete, lively entities that exist democratically on a flat plane. In this imposing monograph, the practice challenges the discipline of architecture to reimagine its place in contemporary culture. A body of work produced over the last decade is presented as part of a constellation of objects, ideas, precedents, and references and articulated with humour and clarity.

The ninth instalment of this journal is dedicated to the work of architectural firm Macías Peredo, influenced by the teachings of Manuel Aguilar-Moreno. Founded by Salvador Macias and Magui Peredo in 2013 in Guadalajara, the land of artisans, they were later joined by their partner Diego Quirarte. The firm questions the role of craft trade and its sustainable possibilities in contemporary architecture. A fundamental part of their approach is creating the conditions to allow for experimentation and improvisation in craft trades. Included are photographs, conceptual drawings, plans and collages, and an introduction of the selected works by Carlos Quintáns.

Résumé:
Research on multifamily housing and its impact on the daily lives of ordinary people, from a leading Canadian architectural firm. These four slipcased volumes build on 5468796 Architecture’s housing manifesto "Add via Edit: A Decade in Housing", the symposium "platform.MIDDLE: Architecture for Housing the 99%" hosted at Illinois Institute of Technology and examples by practice-related offices. The work and research of the Winnipeg-based firm 5468796 Architecture (described as "one of the most talented young design firms worldwide") has focused on "missing middle" and midrise housing in its many forms and ownership models, from refugee and social housing to market-rate condominiums. With the condominium boom taking hold across North America, the number of residential units passing across architects’ desks is unprecedented. As a result of the typology’s inherent repetition and potentially banal program—as well as the private sector’s pursuit of profit, often at the expense of quality and livability—the margin in which architecture can operate is very narrow. Architects must respond to the challenges of this typology with the rigor it deserves.

Résumé:
This collection of articles on the work and person of Rem Koolhaas introduces the Rotterdam-based architect with a simultaneous reference to his surrealist impulses and the disjointed nature of a career, in which books and exhibitions mark intellectual and formal turning points. Commentaries on these seminal moments are interspersed with critiques on the major buildings and projects. In the end, it is difficult to pinpoint which are more important in defining the architect’s conceptual and aesthetic trajectory. The book concludes with a detailed analysis of Koolhaas’s curatorship of the Venice Biennale, yet another swerve in a dazzling, provocative, and paradoxical itinerary.

Résumé:
As early as 1934 Charlotte Perriand began to reflect on the architectural aspects of leisure activities for all, but it was with Les Arcs, her greatest work, that she completed her reflection on the art of living in the mountains. Alongside the developer Roger Godino, Charlotte Perriand displayed all the facets of her immense talent: design, urban planning, but also bioclimatic architecture, of which she was a pioneer. She had to deal with financial and time constraints in order to design most of the Arc 1600 and 1800. Thanks to her perseverance and growing inventiveness, her integration of architecture into the sites, her innovative and human approach to traffic, and the life she breathes into the resort, especially on the rooftops, she has made it a friendly place, in harmony with the environment. Thus, she designs the interior architecture of more than 4,500 homes, 25,000 beds, for an annual flow of more than one million people. Her wish to combine the art of living in the mountains with housing for the greatest number of people has been largely realized.

Résumé:
This book has been designed to present several Ipostudio architecture projects produced in different periods that feature assonances and shared conceptual characteristics and principles. Ipostudio is a working group that was founded in Florence 40 years ago. It carries out architectural design in the sphere of civil architecture, specializing in the areas of social and health structures, schools, special types of residence, and social housing. The works presented in this book are stillborn projects that never saw the light. Now, many years later, it seems only fair to give them another chance and, in a sense, a new life. The primary intention of this book is to tell the story of the origin and development of the design process.
