This book documents the comprehensive development of the project designed by Bernard Tschumi Urbanistes Architectes for the Exposition internationale 2004 in Paris / Seine St-Denis. The Expo will remain in a virtual state, since it was cancelled in August 2002. The design of the master plan, gates, bridges, pavilions, kiosks, and the agora, leads to an original project for a contemporary question: what would be, architecturally speaking, the image of the image, the theme of the theme of Expo 2004? This exploration of the real and the virtual is the major theme of the book.

Résumé:
Pioneering architecture in Graz: the radical architecture project known as the Friendly Alien - the new building for the Kunsthaus Graz - was developed by the British star architects Peter Cook and Colin Fournier. Within the scope of Graz 2003 - Kulturhauptstadt Europas (Graz 2003 - Cultural Capital of Europe) the city of Graz provided the possibility for the two London-based architects Peter Cook and Colin Fournier to transform a visionary concept into built reality: the Kunsthaus Graz, a new and unique site for international exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. With this radical architecture project, Graz received a futuristic-looking building which satisfies to a high degree both the psychological and the functional demands of a visitor-oriented international art museum. The unusual biomorphic forms of the Friendly Alien make for a suspenseful dialog with the historic old town, especially with the century-old Graz landmark, the cubic clock-tower high up on castle hill. The documentation at hand presents the development of the Friendly Alien from a Utopian concept to a highly complex functional body. The extensive photographic material includes first-rate computer simulations and sheds light on the urban environment and its history, shows the unique architectural features of the building, and investigates with an "x-ray view" the complex network of static and technical utilities in the "skin", the nerve center of the Friendly Alien.

Résumé:
This illustrated volume offers a comprehensive overview of the work of Iraqi architect Hadid from her earliest works realized in 1979 to her most recent projects. "Zaha Hadid: Architecture" is published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name at the MAK in Vienna. The book is the first to document the artist´s newest projects and presents an extensive overview over her oeuvre. It contains numerous color illustrations of designs, models and as yet mostly unpublished paintings by Hadid as well as photographs of buildings realised and under construction. Includes texts by Andreas Ruby and Patrik Schuhmacher. shedding profound light onto the architect´s oeuvre. Another special feature is the documentation of the installation "Ice-Storm" especially developed for the MAK exhibition, a "space experiment" with a surface area of 300 m2, a weight of eight tons and height of seven metres, providing the audience with a possibility for an active approach to Hadid´s radically new language of form and space.

Between the early 1930s and 1950s, modernist architecture underwent a spectacular change of fortune in Britain – from a small-scale avant-garde movement, to the official, state-funded architectural idiom of the post-1945 Welfare State. FRS Yorke (1906–62) was an architect who completely followed that trajectory. His book "The modern house" (1934) placed his detailed knowledge of European architecture as an introduction to modern architecture for generations of architects, and provided inspiration for his own designs. But it was only after World War II, and the social and political change which came in its wake, that Yorke was able to turn his reputation as a modernist into commercial success. As his pre-War contemporaries gave up architecture or moved abroad, his practice – Yorke, Rosenberg and Mardall – drew on his experience of working on large, state-funded construction projects during the War, and participated in the transformation of Britain’s social and physical fabric with its new housing, hospitals, schools, universities and airports. This book concludes with a memoir by David Allford, who worked with Yorke and Yorke, Rosenberg and Mardall from 1952 until 1989.

It is the definitive study of Jeckyll’s life and work, and it presents his notable buildings and diverse examples of his decorative arts. Susan Weber Soros and Catherine Arbuthnott examine Jeckyll’s most important architectural commissions, among them the extravagant five-story Cambridge town house, Rance’s Folly. They also discuss the interiors he designed as well as the remarkable furniture and metalwork designs for which he is best known today, including the “Four Seasons Gates” that were exhibited in Paris and Vienna. This book is the catalogue for the first exhibition devoted to the work of Thomas Jeckyll. The exhibition will be open at the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design, and Culture from July 17 through October 19, 2003.
