Résumé:
Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Edgar Kaufmann Sr., his wife, Liliane Kaufmann, and their son, Edgar Kaufmann jr., Fallingwater is lauded for its architectural daring and drama. Here the Kaufmanns sought to live in harmony with the natural world. The rooms of the house reflect this ideal and remain suffused with a natural aesthetic that embraces stone and wood, handwork and craftsmanship. In the living room, the great stone floor flows riverlike toward the horizon of Wright–designed built-in sofas and large-paned casement windows, where views open to balconies, to forest, and to cascading falls. From here “the hatch” opens to the flowing stream below. Pools and the waters of Bear Run were beautiful and for swimming. Relaxed elegance was the order of the day. Delicacy, softness, tactility are everywhere in evidence.

Résumé:
Christoph Hesse Architects is based in Berlin and Korbach, a small town in the northwestern part of the German federal state of Hesse. This rural area in the green heart of Germany is the location of most of the projects the firm has realized since its establishment in 2010, though occasionally, they do plant their rural concepts into an urban context. Christoph Hesse Architects and their friends see their designs as open places of culture. On the one hand, they are catalysts for change in thought, intended to change people’s perspectives and stimulate self-efficacy in society. On the other hand, they are actual interventions in globally prevailing structures that can be disrupted and changed locally. Thus, the firm distinguishes between projects acting as perspective changes and as system changers.

Résumé:
The Madrid-based studio Gutiérrez-delaFuente Arquitectos (GdlF) takes on a paradoxical challenge: in an almost entirely built urban landscape, they care for the unbuilt environment. Instead of focusing only on new architecture, the team led by Natalia Gutiérrez and Julio de la Fuente adapts existing spaces, revealing their hidden potential. Their approach – working with the already-there – understands the unbuilt as a crucial component of an ecological transformation. The exhibition at Aedes, curated by Kaye Geipel and Gutiérrez-delaFuente Arquitectos, presents sustainable strategies for improving in-between spaces through selected projects in Germany, Belgium, Spain, the UK and Switzerland. A central element is the film installation European Encounter Cabinet, in which international experts close to the studio share their perspectives on the future of architecture and urban planning in European cities and territories.

Résumé:
Architect Angela Pang brings together design, research, and teaching. Her Rational Form Making approach explores a fundamental question: How can we build more with less? Operating from her studio, PangArchitect, in Hong Kong and Boston, and as an Assistant Professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, she combines precise analysis, digital methods, and experimental modeling to drive architectural innovations. In search of objectivity in form-making, Pang’s approach merges creative freedom with explorations between natural forces and material-conscious efficiency to discover a new design process. At the heart of the exhibition at Aedes is a striking experimental prototype—a 3D-printed pavilion at the scale of 1:2.5 of an ongoing project for a public space in Hong Kong.

Résumé:
Alberto Ponis "Costruire nella Natura" ("Building in Nature") analyses 22 buildings, highlighting the importance of drawing and photography as the first act of design, as in the Genius Loci series in which he photographed Sardinian vernacular architecture. This publication aims primarily to analyse of Alberto Ponis's work as a whole, including single-family houses and collective houses built in Palau and Costa Paradiso, investigating the relationship with the natural site formed by granite rocks, strawberry trees and holm oaks. These elements become part of the architecture, generating its form. Meticulous work in the Ponis Archive has revealed little-known materials, such as slides of trips to America to visit the Sea Ranch and the architecture of Louis Kahn; visits to Ronchamp and La Tourette and the architecture of Arno Jacobsen and Alvar Aalto. But above all, his letters with clients, the photographs Ponis took of his houses, the sketchbooks during site inspections, the Thought notes, his design vocabulary that he continually defined over time, right down to his "pictorial obsessions" for the Nervi marina and Bonifacio.

Résumé:
This new monograph celebrating 40 years of practice by David Chipperfield Architects is published in double-volume format and covers a cross section of both built and unbuilt work. The monograph highlights several activities led by British Pritzker Prize Laureate Sir David Chipperfield (born 1953) throughout his career. In 1985 he established David Chipperfield Architects, which grew into a global practice with offices in London, Berlin, Milan, Shanghai and Santiago de Compostel. Around 100 design entries are accompanied by 10 critical essays and a series of articles that have been published over the years by various commentators, including Joseph Rykwert and Barry Bergdoll. Richly illustrated, both volumes feature contributions by renowned visual artists such as Candida Höfer, Thomas Struth and Friederike von Rauch. The monograph is edited by Rik Nys and designed by John Morgan Studio.

Celebrated as one of the most innovative and daring architects of the twentieth century, Bruce Goff (1904–1982) imagined a truly independent modern American architecture throughout his six-decade-long career, which began when he was just twelve years old, working as an apprentice at an architectural firm in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Distinguishing himself from the restrained modernism of the postwar period, Goff created single-family homes that were at once livable and adventurous, featuring radical spatial relationships, and designed fantastical large-scale commercial and industrial spaces. His architectural legacy often overshadows his equally experimental artistic career; this book explores the full sweep of Goff’s creativity, which flowed between media and artistic practices. It highlights 150 objects, including architectural drawings and models; abstract paintings; and photographs, ephemera, and building fragments. Inspired by a range of cultural and artistic traditions, from Native American art to Japanese joinery and the landscapes of science fiction, Goff’s work represents a unique synthesis of diverse influences.

Résumé:
In 1891, James Beale, a wealthy, middle-class Unitarian solicitor from Birmingham, commissioned architect Philip Webb to design a holiday home in the Sussex countryside. The Beale family remained sole owners of the property until Helen Beale, James and Margaret Beale’s last surviving child, bequeathed the estate to the National Trust in 1972. Although Standen is recognised by architectural historians as a fine and complete example of Philip Webb’s Arts and Crafts architecture of the period and is widely celebrated for its Morris & Co. wallpapers and furnishings, little has been written about how the family experienced the house, garden and estate, and the extent to which this shaped Standen’s later life under the National Trust. This book fills the void, focusing on the Beales’ lived experience and how they collaborated with Philip Webb in the creation of Standen.
