Résumé:
The first of a unique series of translations of Scamozzi's L'Idea della Architettura Universale. The northern Italian architect, Vincenzo Scamozzi, (1548-1616) designed a number of important palaces, villas and churches in and around Vicenza, Padua and Venice. In addition, he completed a comprehensive study of ancient classical architecture. including the possibilities for its application in a modern context. The first edition of the book was published in 1615. Scamozzi distinguishes himself from his predecessors Vitruvius and Palladio by the scientific approach he follows in his treatise, in which his own designs appear as examples. The clear and detailed account of the historical and geographical background to the principles of classical architecture led to the book's wide popularity in the Northern Netherlands throughout the 17th century. Scamozzi's text was regarded as the most suitable manual for mastering the rules of building, and his theories had a considerable impact upon classical architecture in the Dutch Golden Age.

In this book, British architectural historian Iain Borden achieves the impossible – a ‘user manual’ for architecture. But the book’s title, "Manual", deriving from the handbooks for car mechanics, is not simply an ironic gesture: it indicates that this is a guide to architecture as a hands-on discipline; a guide to architecture through practice. Borden’s analysis of the work of Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, the architectural practice formed in London ten years ago, looks at projects ranging from medical practices, offices and social housing to transport interchanges, pool-houses and lofts. All of these projects are explored in detail, and in 224 fully-illustrated pages "Manual" describes a framework of pathways, tendencies and ideas derived from inspiration, testing and experiments.

Périphériques’ frequent participation in the international ArchiLab exhibition in Orléans and their contribution to the Architecture Biennale 2002 in Venice are sure signs of the national and international recognition which they are receiving. In 2000, Birkhäuser first published an overview of their architectural work entitled M.I.N.N.E.S.O.T.A. now out of print, and the time has come to document their latest works. This new volume describes Périphériques´ most recent buildings and projects. Amongst the realised buildings are the Maisons Icone and MR, the transformation of the Place Furstenberg in Paris, the Café Charbon in Paris, and no doubt the high point is the Cabinet d’art graphique at the Centre Georges Pompidou. Also included are a number of fascinating new projects such as the Small Towers in Tsumari, Japan, the concept for the Habitat shops in Paris and the urban plans for the new Parisian Cité Universitaire.

Résumé:
Since 1955, when they were first standardized, shipping containers have had a radical effect on our physical reality. Seven million of these steel containers are now moving around the world, and their measurements have defined the design of ships, railroad cars, trucks, and cargo airplanes, as well as the landscape of ports, airports, and trucking yards. And that doesn't even begin to touch on the wider and much more invisible system of distribution, of just-in-time-inventory, of information networks in which the container moves. LOT/EK, the New York-based studio with a reputation for creating architecture and environments using industrial objects, here takes on the standard shipping container as medium. The Mobile DwellingUnit (MDU) is "a shipping container transformed into a dwelling that nevertheless retains the attributes of a shipping container, i.e. it remains shippable." It is a "discreet mobile element" that can be moved around the globe, to anywhere with that can receive standard shipping containers. It's full-service interior includes push-out elements with space for sleeping, storage, eating, bathing, and cooking; these elements can be pushed smoothly back into the container when the occupant moves and needs to ship his or her living space along. Consider the MDU a trailer home for travelling between global villages. LOT/EK: Mobile Dwelling Unit, the book, will not only document the MDU concept but will provide greater understanding of the work’s cultural and social context with essays by leading architectural critics, theorists, historians, and practitioners. An interview with the designers by Chris Scoates will illuminate LOT/EK’s process in the creation and development of the MDU as well as their unique approach to architecture. Henry Urbach will place the MDU project in the context of LOT/EK’s larger body of work. Professor Robert Kronenberg, a leading expert on portable architecture, will consider the project within the history of the genre. Aaron Betsky, a leading design critic and Director of NAi, will explore the meaning of the MDU within a larger contemporary cultural and social context of mobility and habitation. A visual essay by Andrew Blauvelt and LOT/EK will explore the territories of the MDU’s inspiration and related themes of nomadic travel and industrial systems of transportation.

Résumé:
This book takes a look at recent work from Kohn Pedersen Fox, one of the most acclaimed international architecture firms. The practice was formed in 1976 in New York, and rapidly made its mark on international architecture with buildings such as the 333 Wacker Drive in Chicago (1979-1983) and the DG Bank Headquarters in Frankfurt (1986-1993). They went on to become one of the most creative and productive offices worldwide and in particular made a name for themselves in the field of skyscraper construction. This volume presents some 19 selected buildings and projects under construction. The focus of the book is the work of KPF London who has gained prominence in recent years with a number of imaginative and technically advanced buildings. Among the projects included are: Thames Court London, World Trade Centre in Amsterdam, Rothermere American Institute in Oxford, ENDESA Headquarters in Madrid, House of Representatives on Cyprus. All are documented with colour illustrations, technical plans and explanatory texts, which show that KPF´s reputation amongst the best is well-deserved.

Résumé:
Perhaps China's most internationally acclaimed architect, Yung Ho Chang is particularly concerned with architecture's role in expressing and reflecting the indigenous culture. He advocates the wide use of bamboo as a building material in Chinese urban design, as put forth in his Bamboo City, exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2000, but while he focuses attention on the changes taking place in Beijing, he is mindful of the globalizing context in which the city is developing. In the past decade, Chang and his Atelier FCIZ (fei chang jan zhu, or unusual architecture), which he founded in the early 1990s as Beijing's first private architectural firm, have created a wide range of intellectually provocative urban projects in China that continue to receive acclaim.
