Résumé:
The conversion and revitalisation of old industrial premises is a construction task which is increasingly important in the transition from an industrial society to a service society. The architect Michael A. Landes converted the site of the Union brewery in Frankfurt into a new urban district for the investor Ardi Goldman by cautiously supplementing the existing substance with a new building. This ensemble situated in Hanauer Landstrasse, Frankfurt's centre for creative people of all kinds, is convincing in the power of its architectural language and in its urban quality. A fine balance of access space and open spaces makes it into a city which is open for a wide range of uses.

Résumé:
Endo Shuhei, a young Japanese architect based in Osaka who attracted international attention when he won the Andrea Palladio Prize in 1993. Shuhei's architecture situates itself at the intersection of two paths: on the one hand, his experimentation with non-Euclidean geometries, an essentially three-dimensional undertaking, and on the other his researches into the use of particular material, galvanized sheet metal. The resulting spaces are fluid, dynamic, mobile, ambiguous, incomplete and even indeterminate. Shuhei curves, doubles, folds and twists a series of metal sheets to the point of dissolving the limits between interior and exterior, between surface and volume, between floor and roof, achieving dramatic effect with a great economy of means.

Résumé:
This is the first serious publication in which the architects present themselves as a group. This new brand of monograph stands in good stead with a contradictory world in which architects have to be chameleonic one moment and instantly recognizable the next, and their architecture both technocratic and popular. In their essays Crimson broach such issues as the changing role of government as patron, client and everything in-between. Another phenomenon to feel the heat of the Crimson spotlight is the increasing demand for soft qualities in architecture and urban design. Market players in particular expect architects to design experiences. At the same time architects have to operate within hard confines that are ever narrowing in a country getting fuller all the time, not just of infrastructure and buildings but more particularly of rules and regulations. In his photographs Marcel Molle gives a focused look at the messy reality of a building in use.

Résumé:
The diverse works of architect Nicholas Hawksmoor (1661–1736) range from small architectural details to ambitious urban plans, from new parish churches to work on the monument of his age, St. Paul’s Cathedral. As a young man Hawksmoor assisted Christopher Wren and John Vanbrugh, emerging from these apprenticeships to design some of the most vigorous and dramatic buildings in England. In this book, architectural historian Vaughan Hart presents a fresh view of Hawksmoor’s built and planned work. In addition, Hart offers the first coherent explanation of Hawksmoor’s theory of architecture. The book explains why Hawksmoor’s buildings look the way they do, what contemporary events influenced his work, and how such ancient buildings as Solomon’s temple and Mausolus’s tomb inspired him. Underscoring the unique qualities of the architect’s accomplishments and aspirations, Hart establishes with new clarity Hawksmoor’s vital role in the development of English architecture.

Résumé:
Alexander Brodsky and Ilya Utkin are the best known of a loosely organized group of Soviet artists known as "Paper architects," who designed much but built little in the early days of Glasnost, in the late 1980s. Many of their elaborate etchings, in which they depicted outlandish, often impossible, structures and cityscapes of allegorical content, were collected in the 1990 book Brodsky – Utkin. Now, with the addition of forty-three new and never-before-published prints, this book is an updated edition. In their designs, by turns funny, cerebral, and deeply human, Brodsky – Utkin borrow from Egyptian tombs, Ledoux's visionary architecture, Le Corbusier's urban master plans, and other historical precedents, collaging these heterogeneous forms in learned and layered scrambles. Underlying the wit and visual inventiveness is an unmistakable moral: that the dehumanizing architecture of the sort seen in Russian cities in the 1980s and 1990s, and elsewhere around the globe, takes a sinister toll. A new preface assesses the works of Brodsky – Utkin and reminds that the greatest art is often born of adversity. Beautifully printed in 300-screen dry-trap duotones by the Steinhauer Press, Brodsky – Utkin is a book for artists, architects, and collectors alike.
