Climate-friendly construction is essential if we are to ensure that future generations can enjoy comfortable living spaces. Design and the choice of materials help to considerably reduce the climate impact of buildings. The techniques featured in this book come from all five climatic zones and many are drawn from non-European and bygone societies. The low-tech approaches, illustrated in schematic drawings and explained in texts, are a source of inspiration for the design of sustainable and energy-autonomous building structures. "Architecture follows climate" provides the first in-depth and comprehensive overview of passive building techniques that have been tried and tested for centuries.

Climate change, extreme weather conditions, the degradation of biodiversity, CO2 and fine-dust pollution in cities demand action. How can architecture make a contribution to achieving a paradigm shift? Can architecture not only be designed to be removable and recyclable, but to be additionally green as well? Can architecture also be an ecological system? What is blue-green architecture? Architects face the demand to fully exploit unused potential and find ways to use plants as tools for design. This is both the case in the development of spaces as well as urban environments, but particularly on buildings themselves. "Green facades" provides architects with the necessary specialist knowledge to competently deal with the living architecture on the building envelope.

Résumé:
Architecture and construction are at a turning point. They account for more than 40% of global CO2 emissions. Rising temperatures can only be reduced if there is a radical change in the field of construction throughout the world. However, how should we design our cities, buildings and living spaces so that we can get closer to the goal of decarbonisation? The book gives 20 architects and urban planners their say on the future of construction. Voices are heard from Mexico to Kenya – from Bangladesh to Switzerland. In the interviews experts give an account of their own experiences with climate-friendly construction as well as regional problems posed by rising CO2emissions. They explain pioneering projects and combine them with their personal desire and political ideals.

Résumé:
There has never been a more important time to understand how to make the best use of local natural resources and create buildings that do not rely on stripping our planet or transporting materials across the globe. First published in 2017, Habitat gathers the world's leading experts on vernacular architecture to examine how local buildings have stood the test of time and offer lessons for the future. Arranged by climate zone- Tropical, Dry, Temperate, Continental, and Polar- each regional section presents buildings in their environments, showing how climatic conditions and vegetation affect the evolution of building styles. This central part of Habitat is bookended by a range of essays exploring the economic and anthropological aspects of shelter, while the book's reference section offers information on materials science and engineering, including how buildings have been adapted to contend with natural disasters.

Résumé:
"Leaf plan" will illustrate comprehensive design approaches to address climate change, urban metabolism, temporary uses, landscape multifunctionality, cohabitation through new modes of urban design based on criteria of flexibility and adaptability. Trento is the experimental territory where the innovative process, methodologies and theoretical reflection have been tested above the framework of the three-year research project "TUT Trento Urban Transformation". The book is structured around the five challenges (Ecological, Accessible, Smart, Welcoming and Beauty) proposed by the TUT research group for the Trento Leaf Plan, the new metabolic plan for the city of Trento. Beside the innovative field-test experimentations, the holistic methodological approach proposed by the book will be transferable and adapted in other metropolitan contexts to enhance the urban ecological transition. The publication, edited by the TUT research group, will include theoretical essays, critical selection of reference projects, operational tools, and interviews with experts in ecological transition, sustainable mobility, co-design approach, sharing, and urban resilience.

Built by hand : vernacular buildings around the world

Résumé:
"Built by Hand" is the most extensive documentation ever published of vernacular buildings throughout the world. With examples from nearly every continent, the book documents the diverse methods people have used to create shelter from locally available natural materials, and shows the impressive handmade finished products through this truly stunning compilation of photographs. Unlike modern buildings that rely on industrially produced materials and highly specialized electric tools and techniques, the shelters featured here represent a rapidly disappearing genre of handcrafted and beautifully composed structures. They are the work of people who, as builders and homesteaders, have integrated artistic beauty and practical form into their shelter needs. "Built by Hand" offers insights into the world of vernacular building, along with potential solutions to many of the problems that plague modern architecture. It is a must-have collection that preserves and documents the rich cultural past of each structure and its community, and offers inspiration for those looking to build in a way that is motivated by something larger than speed, efficiency, and economic profit.
