Résumé:
Bringing together real-world examples, "Architecture and energy" offers starting points for how to approach construction today and into the future. The energy requirements of buildings are enormous, resulting in a significant proportion of global carbon dioxide emissions, both in the construction phase and during the building’s use and eventual demolition. In an era of energy transition and extreme weather phenomena, the question of how we build in a time of climate change becomes all the more urgent. A sustainably-built wood and concrete supermarket that includes a roof farm, a kindergarten constructed from locally sourced recycled materials, renovating an office building so that it can remove its air conditioning and ventilation systems: in addition to the choice of materials and innovative operating concepts, the possibilities for reducing emissions and energy requirements lie above all in thinking about the entire life cycle of a building, including refurbishing rather than new construction when possible. This volume presents international best-practice projects characterized by sustainable design and provides forward-looking answers.

Résumé:
Drawing on the United Nations' assertion that "the climate crisis is mainly a water crisis," this thought-provoking book compiles over 100 key terms defined by contemporary thinkers in science, philosophy, politics, activism and architecture. These terms—such as Water Rights, Hydrocatharsis, Decommodification of Water and Liquid Modernity—form a vital lexicon to guide transformative action and foster a more symbiotic relationship with water. Structured as a collaborative exploration, the book combines scientific insight, philosophical depth and architectural vision to redefine how we engage with water socially, politically and ecologically. Illustrated with cartographic case studies, the volume offers vivid and hopeful scenarios for reshaping human–water interdependence. Through its diverse contributors and an interdisciplinary approach, "100 Words for Water" challenges readers to rethink water management and design as the foundation of a resilient, multispecies future.

Résumé:
Through a collection of essays and case studies, ''Water Works'' shows over sixty careful responses to flooding, draught, pollution, extraction and other issues around freshwater. Divided into seven themes: Purity, Wild, Scale, Representation, Violence, Infrastructure and Commerce, ''Water Works'' allows us to learn from places and makers that build on the intricate relationships between people and other life forms, materials and (infra)structures. Critically blending knowledge derived from craft, art, science and ecology, these works ask: what are sensible ways to embrace and connect with water? Through wading, floating, testing and tasting, how can we generate more desirable ecosocial relations? In facing large-scale engineering, climate change, privatization and other forms of water violence, these works are an invitation to design together with water as a site and medium for ecosocial renewal.

Architecture and construction are at a turning point. The global rise in temperature can only be reduced if construction undergoes radical change. The second volume of the book ‘'Architecture and Climate Change" once again gives 20 architects and urbanists a chance to have their say on the future of construction. It collects voices from the UK, USA, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Japan, Belgium and Switzerland. In the interviews, the experts discuss their own experiences with climate-friendly construction as well as regional problems relating to the rise in CO2 emissions. They explain pioneering projects and link them to personal wishes and political ideals. The result is a multi-layered kaleidoscope of different perspectives, wishes and hopes for an architecture that fulfils the climate goals.

Résumé:
In today’s context, concepts such as component hunting, urban mining, and biosourced materials do not merely denote technical strategies. Rather, they articulate ways of reconfiguring the relationship between architecture, materiality, and productive processes. A critical response to the demands of the environmental agenda, this issue explores how these three approaches can shift architectural focus towards an active engagement with resources, their cycles, and material trajectories. It challenges the notion of architecture as a finite object, advancing instead a material ethic in which design becomes an act of negotiation, translation, and ecological and economic commitment.

The visibility of climate-emergency phenomena and multiplying crises results in a growing awareness of immediate and long-term repercussions of our design actions. Led by Urszula Kozminska, the project "Time matters" is a collective reflection on an open and experimental approach towards sustainability in which the idea of time is the core of investigations. It aims to showcase the power of fictional architectural narratives in stimulating new ways of mapping, designing, constructing, and communicating. Furthermore, the project promotes an architecture that evolves alongside shifting conditions and introduces its dynamics as a primary design parameter.

What if we were no longer allowed to build new structures? Questions like this — and many others — are raised in the exhibition "What If: A Change of Perspective by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB)." The DGNB is a non-profit association based in Stuttgart that has been advocating for future-oriented and responsible building for 18 years. With the DGNB Certification System, it has developed an internationally recognised planning and optimisation tool for assessing sustainable buildings and districts. The exhibition invites visitors to question conventional ways of thinking and to rediscover the essence of sustainable architecture: buildings and districts that offer people a good home, remain affordable, and provide design-driven answers to the climate crisis. A central narrative traces the evolution of sustainable building, accompanied by six thematic sections and the award-winning projects of the German Sustainability Award for Architecture.

Résumé:
"At the edge" is a rich and evocative call to action at a time when new ideas are urgently needed. Mandatory reading for policy analysts and decision makers in the public, private, and volunteer sectors, it will be equally useful to scholars, teachers, students, and others interested in creating sustainable societies. Throughout the world, biophysical evidence is mounting that human growth and activity patterns are slowly destroying the earth. This ecological deterioration is accompanied by similar social and economic decline, with potentially grave consequences for the continued existence of human societies. Yet, as Ann Dale compassionately argues, it is not too late to take action. Hope lies in sustainable development - the fundamental human imperative of the 21st century. Sustainable development, in Dale's view, is the process of reconciling three imperatives: the ecological, the social, and the economic. Equitable access to resources in all three spheres is fundamental to the global realization of sustainable development. This will not be realized without strong leadership by governments at all levels. Ultimately needed is a new framework for governance based on human responsibility and a recognition of the interconnectedness of human and natural systems.
