Résumé:
For Donna van Milligen Bielke architecture begins and ends with architecture. Even if she never mentions it explicitly, for her, architecture suffices to make architecture. Just as a language comprises all its words, including the ones that are rarely used, architecture is based on all its forms and manifestations. Wittingly or unwittingly, every architect stands in relation to all architecture that has ever been made. Not every architect fully acknowledges this, but Van Milligen Bielke certainly does. In her work it is possible to see the depth of the discipline’s history.

Résumé:
Stéphane Fernandez creates ''silent architecture'' that respects and invests in the landscape as it takes shape. A minimalist in expression with a maximalist’s attention to detail, the French architect centers his models, plans, and sketches on the search for materials, as well as the movement of bodies and the tensions generated between them. ''Imperfection—Atelier Stéphane Fernandez'' is the first book to focus on Fernandez’s studio in Aix-en-Provence, Atelier Stéphane Fernandez, and it features five designs emblematic of his approach: a children’s pavilion in Saint-Raphaël, a media library in Carnoux, a dormitory and laboratory building in Banyuls-sur-Mer, a cultural center in Vertou, and a primary school in Cannes. The book includes a manifesto and essay by Fernandez, a conversation between Fernandez and architectural historian Éléonore Marantz, and more than one hundred color illustrations, including plans and photographs by Berlin-based photographer Schnepp Renou.

Director of one of the leading architecture schools in the USA, his visionary schemes span all scales, from silverware to master plans. Founded by Alonso in 2001, Xefirotarch’s multidisciplinary design obsessions are based in an appreciation for mutant forms, which have been realized in designs for architecture, sculpture, products and design objects. This showcase of works presents the practice’s major designs since 2001, including plans for Helsinki Library, Budapest Museum and major architecture projects in Barcelona.

Built between 1954 and 1959, Stuttgart’s Romeo and Julia tower blocks defied the staggering banality of postwar German housing with bold colors and jagged triangular balconies. Designed by Hans Scharoun (1893–1972) toward the end of a career dedicated to experimentation and the development of a new and democratic style of architecture, Romeo and Julia constitute the most daring and original attempts to recalibrate the ''dwelling process.'' Drawing on a vast trove of previously unpublished materials held in the archives of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, Markus Peter and Ulrike Tillmann offer unprecedented insight into Scharoun’s design process. His writings and lectures of several decades show him weaving together the diverse strands of research that were to form the basis for his floor plans. Inherently curious and undeterred by contradictions and complexity, Scharoun was unflagging in his efforts to build on his understanding of what housing is about. Romeo and Julia, with their innovative and socially responsive organization of space, thus mark the culmination of the architect’s profound and long-standing engagement with a fundamental human need.

Résumé:
This book by architect Toshiharu Naka establishes specific concepts based on two systems: a “Social Cycle”, or a cycle coexisting with small economies, and an “Ecological Cycle”, or a cycle of natural energy and resources. He illustrates his macroscopic idea to integrate the two through his architectural works. Naka’s detailed speculation includes the live/work house, places for spontaneous activity, landscapes of grouped houses, realising possibilities for fusion, and dynamic programme theory. He proposes intermediate areas as spaces for interaction with the outside, giving visibility to the social cycle, or as thermal environments, allowing the ecological cycle to become visible as well.
