This book examines the relationships between the work of ''Archigram'' and that of the British ''High-Tech'' architects, groups that were based in London and developing in the 1960s and 70s. While one group consisted of academics and artists known for their humour and eccentricity and the other were a group of deadly serious architects emerging to international proliference, this book argues that they shared uncannily similar impulses. There is the self-evident commonality of language: overblown machines, kits-of-parts of pieces and components, and a disintegration of building as object in favour of the constituent elements. Underlying both movements is a mutual, undying optimism in technological process and technological expression. Set within the rich history and culture of London, the book makes its comparisons by exploring central shared ideas: utopia, engineering, theatricality, infrastructure and narrative, and the iconography of war machinery.

Russian architect Konstantin Melnikov (1890–1974) was a key figure of this movement, with many of his realized projects, such as his cylindrical residential house completed in 1929, becoming modernist icons. Because he refused to conform to architectural standards after Stalin's cultural turn in 1932, his works were largely forgotten for several decades. He was rehabilitated and received public recognition for his imaginative constructions only a few years prior to his death in 1974. This publication presents models of Melnikov's built and unbuilt works, created under the direction of scholar Pavel Kuznetsov by the students of the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio. The models are accompanied by photographs, sketches and project descriptions expanding on Melnikov's work. An essay by Kuznetsov situates the architect in his historical context, shedding light on an underappreciated figure of architectural history.

De Zwarte Hond was founded 40 years ago in Groningen and has evolved from an established architectural practice into a multidisciplinary studio with more than 120 people. With offices in the Netherlands and Germany, the firm combines social commitment with high-quality architectural and urban design projects. Going beyond mere architecture and urbanism by taking responsibility for the quality of the built environment in a wider sense, the office considers itself more a movement rather than a traditional design office. Optimistic Activism is presented across two exhibition spaces: the HOW illustrates the collaborative way of working, where generosity shapes both the spatial and social approach. The WHAT showcases twelve projects through models, drawings and photographs, demonstrating how social engagement, design expertise and craftsmanship translate into built reality. Through their methods and projects, De Zwarte Hond generates optimistic impulses, creating places that bring people together and enrich community life.
