Architecte sans oeuvre, Lequeu (1757-1826) est d'abord un dessinateur hors du commun, dont l'imaginaire, nourri de références telles que Le Songe de Polyphile, se déploie dans la création de monuments et fabriques fictives donnant naissance à des paysages d'invention, complétés par une impressionnante galerie de portraits grimaçants ou de détails d'anatomie dépeints sans complaisance. Issu d'un milieu artisanal, qui tente à la faveur de la Révolution, de s'élever socialement, Lequeu, réduit sa vie durant à un emploi de bureau subalterne, est le fils du libertinage des Lumières et des jardins anglochinois. Six mois avant de disparaître dans le dénuement et l'oubli, il lègue à la Bibliothèque nationale de France l'une des oeuvres graphiques les plus singulières et les plus fascinantes de son temps, qui permet de s'immerger dans la dérive solitaire et obsédante d'un artiste hors du commun.

L'édition de ce catalogue, paru à l'occasion de l'inauguration de la restructuration du musée de Besançon en nomvebre 2018, est centrée sur un moment particulier et éphémère de ce projet. On y découvre la mise en relation des espaces par la lumière, les transparences, avant que les œuvres ne soient accrochées et que le public arrive. La restructuration du musée des beaux-arts et d'archéologie de Besançon est une réalisation particulière qui réunit en un seul lieu trois architectures. Celle du bâtiment originel de Pierre Marnotte au XIXe siècle, puis l'extension dans les murs en 1967 de Louis Miquel liée au « musée à croissance illimitée » de son maître Le Corbusier, pressenti pour réaliser ce travail. Par la suite, le musée souffrant de divers dysfonctionnements et d'un manque de lisibilité architecturale, l'architecte Adelfo Scaranello a travaillé à rendre intelligibles spatialement les différentes phases historiques du lieu tout en répondant à la demande d'exploitations diversifiées d'espaces d'expositions.
