Résumé:
The architecture of Geoffrey Bawa (1919-2003) was revolutionary. The Sri Lankan architect succeeded in fusing sensitivity for local context with the technological discoveries and design principles of modernism in his work. A pioneer of bioclimatic architecture, Bawa incorporated materials and layouts specific to Sri Lanka’s monsoon climate and storied architectural history into his modernist designs. Although he never built outside Asia, his work and way of thinking resonate far beyond the region. Gathering essays by scholars and writers across a multitude of disciplines, this volume spotlights the beautiful architectural drawings of Bawa’s practice. Illustrated with more than 200 drawings and photographs, many of which published for the first time, the book delves into the central, multipronged role of the medium in Bawa’s work. It also explores the identity of post-independence Sri Lanka, which Bawa helped to shape aesthetically and ideologically.

Résumé:
Architect, planner, and arts advocate Alfred Preis (1911–1994) dedicated his many creative talents to his beloved, adopted home, Hawai‘i. Born to a Jewish family, raised, and educated in Vienna, Preis became an exile after escaping from Nazi-occupied Austria in 1939 and briefly being interned as an "enemy alien" when the United States entered World War II. Preis emerged as one of Hawai‘i’s leading modern architects in the 1950s and 1960s. His new, regionalist vision for architecture and planning were specific to the Hawaiian context, its people, its tropical climate, and its stunning landscape. Preis’s crowning achievement was his design for the famed USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor in 1962. This is the first publication to examine Alfred Preis’s body of work in architecture, which spans from 1939 to 1963, including not only several acclaimed public projects but also illustrating the transition from a European modern language into a regional modernism, unifying both cultures in distinct and pioneering ways.

From the bustle of Johannesburg to the neon of Las Vegas, Denise Scott Brown’s advocacy for ''messy vitality'' has transformed the way we look at the urban landscape. Unconventional, eloquent, and with a profound sociopolitical message, Scott Brown is one of our era’s most influential thinkers on architecture and urbanism. The anthology ''Denise Scott Brown: In other eyes'' – marking the 50th anniversary of the seminal treatise Learning from Las Vegas – paints a portrait of Scott Brown as seen through the eyes of leading architectural historians and practitioners. It features new scholarship on her education on three continents, her multidisciplinary teaching, and her use of urban patterns and forces as tools for architectural design – a practice documented in a new comment by Scott Brown, noting that sometimes ''1+1>2.''

Résumé:
This book documents the materiality and spaces of the Garden House by Baracco+Wright Architects through photographs by Rory Gardiner. The imagery and thoughts reflect on the dialogue of building, life and systems conceived in an ongoing project of environmental repair. This holiday house is conceived as just a little more than a tent: a deck and raised platform are covered by a transparent "shed"; the interior perimeter "veranda" is garden space; the soil and natural ground line are maintained and carried through; a low lying site with terrestrial orchids and lillies, flood waters seasonally move through the site unimpeded; similarly the indigenous vegetation has begun to grow inside. B+W believe in a wide role for architectural thinking beyond the individual building. All projects are approached with a particular and equal attention to the parts and the whole, to individual project conditions and to the discourse of Architecture.

Résumé:
This is the first monograph on the life and work of the Czech born British architect Kaplicky (1937–2009). It is a fully comprehensive work based on a decade of research and is a distinctive portrait of one of the most distinguished architects and designers of the 20th and 21st centuries. At the same time it is an exploration into historical events, which influenced a number of talented artists, writers and designers, some of whom were forced, like Kaplicky, to emigrate from Czechoslovakia in order to expand their skills and search for beauty through living in freedom in democratic countries. After immigrating to the United Kingdom in 1968, Kaplicky applied his imagination and diligence and enhanced his skills and aptitude, gaining admiration and respect following the co-founding of the innovative Future Systems studio in 1979. With his wide-ranging architectural and design œuvre Kaplicky affirmed greatness of his immense talent and ability.

Résumé:
Though he garnered global praise at the peak of his career from 1960 to 1990, Australian architect John Andrews faced waning fame as postmodern cultural transformations challenged modernist design values, and wider social and economic changes led to a withdrawal of government-funded institutional commissions. Yet his body of work is a remarkable achievement that deserves to be better known. Following a path from Australia to the United States and Canada and back again, ''John Andrews: Architect of uncommon sense'' examines his most important buildings and reveals how the internationalization of architecture during this period was an unexpectedly dispersed geographical phenomenon, following more complex flows and localized progressions than earlier modernist ideas that travelled from center to periphery, metropole to outpost.

Résumé:
This is the first book devoted to the Bangladeshi architect Marina Tabassum and her multifaceted architectural oeuvre. Tabassum’s exploratory approach makes her architectural practice one of the outstanding contemporary positions internationally. Her diverse oeuvre spans from governmental projects to housing and has brought her numerous honors and accolades in the international field of architecture. The selection of her architecture in this book ranges from early projects in the city of Dhaka shortly after completing her studies at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) to recent mobile modular structures called Khudi Bari. Tabassum is establishing the latter for the people affected by displacement in various geographically and climatically challenged locations—both in the Ganges Delta and in the Rohingya refugee camp at Cox’s Bazar on the border to Myanmar, which is currently the largest refugee camp in the world.

Résumé:
Following "Adjaye: Works 1995-2007", this second volume looks back on the impressive portfolio of work created by architect David Adjaye between 2007 and 2015. During the years covered in this book, the acclaimed architect embraced expansive projects, taking him outside Europe to work on major ventures, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver and the Moscow School of Management Skolkovo. Designing buildings around the world, including two projects connected with the post-Katrina reconstruction program in New Orleans, Adjaye carefully tailored his approach to each place, sensitive to the important role architecture plays in affirming a sense of community and identity. This volume brings together these recent projects and presents them with new analyses and personal insights from the architect, including detailed drawing and site plans and stunning color photography, demonstrating the originality of Adjaye’s talents.
