Résumé:
From 2008 to 2010, Madrid based architects Luis M. Mansilla and Emilio Tunon held the Jean Labatut Visiting Professorship at the Princeton School of Architecture. More than a collection of student work, From Rules to Constraints is a wide ranging reflection on teaching, design practice, history and the city. Focusing on three sites at three distinct scales, this book examines the constraints of the architectural project social, political, historical, and environmental in order to create new rules for working. Examining both their teaching methods and Mansilla + Tunon`s own design work, the book presents the design process as an ongoing conversation between the building and the environment, between freedom and limits, and between the decided and undecided.

Résumé:
This book challenges traditional assumptions about the relationship between art and architecture. From 2008 through 2010, David Adjaye, along with Marc McQuade, taught three studios at the Princeton School of Architecture. Each studio focused on a collaboration with three distinguished artists Matthew Ritchie, Teresita Fernandez, and Jorge Pardo on interventions in three vastly different sites: the state of New Jersey, the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, and the city of Merida in Mexicos Yucatan Peninsula. Through an exploratory process of questioning, developing, and testing, each architect and artist reexamines the expectations traditionally associated with the conventions of architectural design and representation.

Résumé:
This book follows the evolution of Millau Viaduct in southern France from first sketches through to completion, as designed and executed by Foster + Partners, with engineer Michel Virlogeux. Spanning the spectacular gorge of the River Tarn in Southern France, the Millau Viaduct provides a critical link in the A75 autoroute between Clermont-Ferrand and Beziers. Commissioned by the French state, the 2.46 km-long viaduct resolves numerous structural and design challenges in an elegant cable-stayed form. Utilising optimised, repetitive spans with piers taller than the Eiffel Tower at their zenith, the bridge is structurally and visually elegant. Not only does it exemplify technical excellence, the Millau Viaduct illustrates the powerful impact that architecture of infrastructure can have on the environment. This monograph will appeal to those interested in architecture and design; equally, it illustrates a significant engineering feat.

Résumé:
A monograph on the architectural practice WOHA, known for its environmentally friendly buildings. This first monograph on Singapore-based WOHA uses examples such as open-aired tropical family homes, green permeable high-rises, and a cutting-edge resort on the island of Bali to show how the firm has continued to create innovative, environmentally sensitive structures that blend into their environments, yet maintain aesthetic integrity. Essays in the book explore WOHA's tropical architecture, discuss the Asian understanding of nature, and examine newly designed community spaces. Headed by Wong Mun Summ and Richard Hassell, the practice is making a name internationally for their sophisticated projects, which are presented in this volume. Through numerous illustrations and in-depth essays, this book reveals the innovative, sustainable, and green designs of WOHA.

Acapulco's striking Sunset Chapel overlooks its surrounding garden and the magnificent bay through slatted concrete walls; the light and view pour into this mysterious and stark building, which stands like a modern-day Stonehenge. The Chapel of La Estancia in Cuernavaca is a glass pavilion, like a diamond at the center of a lush colonial-style garden. Both of these recent projects by the young BNKR Architectural firm, headed by Stephen and Sebastian Suarez, are featured in this slim but significant book. Photographs, plans and models are included; these chapels are clearly a sign that these brothers are continuing a significant career.

Résumé:
This volume is an attempt to take a closer look at the planning and execution stages of past and ongoing projects of SAM architects. It is a search for a greater understanding of one's own working processes; processes that in a practice such as theirs are often quite automatic, yet which need to be called into question each time new projects are undertaken. In line with this premise, the limited number of projects selected for this publication can be seen as prototypical of the development process pursued by SAM's architectural practice. They exemplify their inquiring and open approach, and the breadth of challenges they face. SAM see architecture not as a style reflected in the repeated production of images, but as an evolutionary process - a process that is subject to the logic of design and construction.

Résumé:
The only Austrian winner of the Pritzker Prize (1985) and president of the architecture biennale in Venice, the Viennese architect Hans Hollein (born 1934) has been a leading exponent of postmodernism in architecture. Yet his global stature as an architect has overshadowed his design work of the 1970s and 1980s and his artistic work of the 1960s and 1970s, despite past exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. This richly illustrated, comprehensive catalogue, and the exhibition it accompanies at the Neue Galerie in Graz, is the first retrospective of Hollein as a truly universal artist and a renaissance man for the digital age. It is also the first to present Hollein's oeuvre as a whole: his work as artist, designer and architect, but also as theoretician, curator, teacher and collaborator with such artists as Christo and Claes Oldenburg.

Résumé:
Completed in 2008, the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, California, is one of the most beautiful ecclesiastical buildings of recent times. Its design, by Craig W. Hartman of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), combines the early Christian symbol of the fish with an innovative structure made of glass, wood and concrete. A glazed, bivalve exterior envelops the building, while a layer of fritted glass diffuses light and heat. Inside, the vaulted wooden ceiling soars 130 feet upwards, where an oculus opens out to the sky. The unique Omega window behind the altar was created with the help of new technology developed specifically for the cathedral: an image of the Romanesque relief of Christ from the tympanum of Chartres Cathedral was digitized and rendered as laser-perforated holes in an aluminum panel, creating a 60-foot pixilated image.
