L'originalité de cet artiste visionnaire, auteur de la saline royale d'Arc-et-Senans et des barrières de Paris, repose sur l'entrelacement de l'architecture et de la poésie. La France napoléonienne a ignoré Ledoux et rejeté son art et ses idées. Au XIXe siècle, les trois quarts de ses édifices ont été détruits. Pourtant, cette figure majeure de " l'expansion de l'art français ", selon l'expression de l'historien Louis Réau, a exercé une influence considérable en Europe et tout particulièrement en Russie. Alexandre Ier, qui accède au trône en 1801, désirait faire de Saint-Pétersbourg, en chantier depuis ses prédécesseurs, de Pierre le Grand à Catherine II et Paul Ier, la plus belle capitale européenne. Le mouvement de réforme opéré par l'architecture française, reflet de l'esprit des Lumières et des idées progressistes, trouva dans l'Empire russe un terrain fertile et se manifesta avant même l'installation d'Alexandre au pouvoir. Cette époque de gestation et de formation du classicisme russe fut celle de personnalités telles que Vallin de La Mothe, arrivé en 1759 dans la ville impériale, Kazakov, Starov et Bajenov. Avec Alexandre Ier, on assiste à l'Age d'or du classicisme, dont les principaux protagonistes sont Zakharov, Voronikhine, Lvov, les architectes français Thomon et Montferrand, l'Écossais Cameron, les Italiens Quarenghi, Gilardi, Rossi et la famille Adamini, qui partageaient une même inspiration ledolcienne, dont on constate la prédominance, jusqu'au XXe siècle, à Saint-Pétersbourg, Moscou, Kiev ou Iekaterinbourg.
