Each plate is connected to the overall book by the continuous text, to the architect’s drive through the images of an iconographic autobiography, and to his works themselves through photos and rendering. As a book, it is primarily a piece of work in its own right, an image that evokes new images in the viewer. Since the end of the 1990s, Valerio Olgiati has been regarded as one of the most independent and exceptional exponents of Swiss architecture. The book compiles all his important buildings and projects since 1996.

The design process of Will Alsop acts as a conduit for the dreams and aspirations of others. Moving from public consultation to the privacy of his painting studio – here ideas are born in the liquidity of paint, the serendipity of collage and the flourish of line, resulting in the avant-garde and vibrant designs that Alsop is particularly well known for. Whether the world approves of these designs or not, does not devalue the creative and artistic process which produces so rich, varied, challenging and inspirational outcomes. Focusing on the refreshing process of design with which Will Alsop engages, Tom Porter reveals and traces the process, from public consultation to private studio, from paint to line to model, and in doing so uncovers a treasure trove of ideas for transforming the process of architectural design. Whether a working architect or a student embarking on the first steps towards creating your own design process, this book offers an insight and example into how engaging with the public, before painting the way into architecture, can offer the most stimulating solutions.

Guided by Fathy's principles, Ahmad Hamid, an architect who collaborated with Hassan Fathy in the Institute for Appropriate Technology, identifies questions about the nature of Islamic art and its building culture, as well as the origins of modern architecture. This book provides new insights into Hassan Fathy's profuse, pathbreaking design documents and built projects, while exploring the socioeconomic, environmental, psychological, and esthetic components of Fathy's work in the light of a quest for a new universal modernity for the twenty-first century.

Résumé:
Valerio Olgiati has worked as an architect in Los Angeles, Zurich, and, since 2008, in Flims. He has been a visiting professor at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) in Zurich, the AA in London, and at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Since 2002 he has been professor at the Accademia di architettura in Mendrisio and since autumn 2009 he has held the Kenzo Tange Chair at Harvard. The unmistakable straight lines and independence of his buildings has brought him international attention. The Olgiati’s family estate is located in the historical town center of Flims. Rudolf Olgiati (1910–95) purchased the property, known as Dado, in 1930 and throughout his life used it to realize his architectural thoughts and ideas. Today, the son is living in his father’s house, and in 2008 he set up his much-admired architectural firm on the former site of the barn. This publication portrays the life and work of both architects using the example of the house and studio - that is, through the transformations they have undergone at the hands of their residents over a period of nearly eighty years. It shows personal furniture and objects, the individual layout and design of the spaces, and hence the penchants and attitudes of the two architects. At the same time this unusual portrait documents not only the relationship between father and son but also the characters of two generations and their understanding of architecture and aesthetics.
