Résumé:
The potential of electric light as a new building 'material' was recognized in the 1920s and became a useful design tool by the mid-century. Skilful lighting allowed for theatricality, narrative, and a new emphasis on structure and space. "The Structure of Light" tells the story of the career of Richard Kelly, the field's most influential figure. Six historians, architects, and practitioners explore Kelly's unparalleled influence on modern architecture and his lighting designs for some of the 20th century's most iconic buildings: Philip Johnson's Glass House; Louis Kahn's Kimbell Art Museum; Eero Saarinen's GM Technical Center; and Mies van der Rohe's Seagram Building, among many others. This publication demonstrates the range of applications, building types, and artistic solutions he employed to achieve a 'nocturnal modernity' that would render buildings evocatively different at night. The survival of Kelly's rich correspondence and extensive diaries allows an in-depth look at the triumphs and uncertainties of a young profession in the making.

An insider's look into one of contemporary architecture's most cutting-edge firms. SHoP's striking projects and unique business model are captured in this monograph. Designed in a playful and intricate manner, "SHoP: Out of Practice" reflects the character and attitudes of the firm itself. Thirteen projects are shown in detail, including the Barclays Center at Atlantic Yards, Brooklyn; a master plan for the East River Waterfront, New York; and Dunescape, winner of the annual MoMA/P.S.1 competition for a summer courtyard installation. Interspersed between the projects are thematic explorations of current issues in architecture: style, risk, innovation, sustainability, and more.

Tous les documents proviennent des archives de Yona Friedman Budapest-born and resident in Paris, Yona Friedman has since the mid-twentieth century pioneered the concept of 'mobile architecture', whereby town planning and housing is conceived by users, and anticipates the flux and uncertainty of future users' needs. Friedman's concentration on 'mobile architecture' – a position gaining in popularity today – has imbued his work with great social generosity, and an improving ideology. This compilation of Friedman's output offers a comprehensive overview of one of today's most influential architects and urban theorists, and includes plans, sketches, drawings, models, collages and installations.

Résumé:
Bridging the domains of urban design, infrastructure, landscape, and architecture, AGPS architecture approaches problem solving as a collaborative enterprise, exploring the relationship between idea and practice and emphasizing the importance of the functional, technical, economic, environmental, and aesthetic in design and construction methods. This publication is the first comprehensive survey of the projects imagined and completed by AGPS architecture. Complete with color photographs of each of the projects, floor plans, sections, and elevations, as well as several essays that delve into frequently overlooked aspects of architectural design, this volume serves as both a portfolio and a sort of exploration of latent, but recognizable traits that are as much a part of the buildings as their physical manifestation.

Inside is a motor that turns the house 360 degrees on its own axis: Villa Girasole, constructed in 1935 by Angelo Invernizzi, follows the path of the sun and the views into the landscape. Il Girasole shows an entire day’s course. During this time, the film captures the villa’s architecture and atmosphere, its spaces and furnishings, thus becoming a space of imagination of life back then; and the building, a resonating body of the era’s eccentric ideas.

Résumé:
Published here for the first time are Palladio's preparatory materials for an illustrated edition of Polybius' Histories alongside Palladio's material for his edition of Julius Caesar' Commentaries (1575). Long thought to have been lost, his original Polybius has now been recomposed by drawing on three manuscript copies: the mock-up used by Palladio to plan the edition, rediscovered in the London British Library in 1977; a second copy found in Florence in 1986 and a third exemplar only very recently found in the New York Public Library. Here the reproductions of the 43 etchings for the Polybius have been accompanied by 42 etchings which Palladio dedicated to Caesar's deeds. This offers a complete picture of his effort to reconstruct those excellent features of ancient warfare on which Palladio wished to base his own proposals for reforming the contemporary Venetian militia, as well as give a different point of view on the history of architecture.

Résumé:
This exhibition catalogue examines Palladio's personal development and architecture, his influence on others achieved through his I Quattro Libri dell'Architettura, the subsequent dissemination of his teachings through translations and pattern books in Britain and America, and the influence of Palladianism on architecture in the New World. The promulgation of Palladian principles resulted in new and original interpretations that took firm hold in America, influencing both grand formal buildings and smaller utilitarian structures. The drawings are supported by numerous architectural models. Three large examples--the Pantheon, Villa Rotunda, and Jefferson's unrealized design for the White House--programmatically illustrate the journey from Rome to America. Smaller models along with rare architectural texts and pattern books, through which Palladio's ideas were primarily transmitted, reinforce the themes of the book.
