Résumé:
Mexican architect and painter Juan O'Gorman (1905–82) had a spectacular debut as an architect, designing his own house at the age of 24. On the strength of this building, Diego Rivera commissioned O'Gorman to design a pair of studio-houses for himself and Frida Kahlo on contiguous lots, connected by a bridge. But O'Gorman was somewhat forgotten in histories of modern architecture, until the restoration of Rivera's and Kahlo's house in the late 1990s led to a rediscovery of the architect's work and a reappraisal of his place in contemporary Mexican architecture. In 2013 O'Gorman's own first house, which he began designing in 1929 and completed in 1931, was restored. Uncompromisingly radical and rigorously functional, this design reveals O'Gorman as a Mexican pioneer of avant-garde architecture. Casa O'Gorman 1929 tells the story of this unique building.

Résumé:
Without a doubt the most brilliant architectural innovator of his day, Sir John Soane (1753-1837) displayed a remarkable ability to adapt and modernize the language ofclassical architecture. The range of his built designs, from the ingenuity of his own house in London's Lincoln's Inn Fields (now Sir John Soane's Museum) to the opulence and originality of the Bank of England, places him on a par with other leading European neoclassicists, such as Ledoux and Schinkel. His architectural vocabulary remains infl uential to this day. Back in print, this landmark publication considers Soane's architectural achievements as well as his life and public role. It reproduces more than 100 of Soane's drawings and contains specially commissioned photographs of his original models and existing buildings. Contributors discuss all of the architect's major commissions, including the Dulwich Picture Gallery, the Law Courts at Westminster, and the Bank of England.

Résumé:
No photographer during architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s lifetime was granted as much personal and professional access as his official photographer, Pedro E. Guerrero, who spent 20 years shooting Wright’s work, his homes and many key moments in his life. Picturing Wright: An Album from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Photographer provides an illuminating portrait of Wright from the day of Guerrero’s serendipitous hiring in 1939 until his last assignment just before the architect’s 1959 death, a particularly momentous time in Wright’s career. Guerrero captured Wright at Taliesin West in Arizona, at Taliesin in Wisconsin and later at “Taliesin East”—his personally remodeled suite at New York’s Plaza Hotel. Guerrero was there as the Arizona site evolved from a makeshift camp to an internationally renowned architectural community; for the Taliesin Fellowship’s treks east to Taliesin each spring; and for life among the apprentice architects who created buildings, grew their own food, picnicked on the hillsides and thrived under the master’s watchful but benevolent eye.

Résumé:
Hungarian-born French architect Yona Friedman is one of the most fascinating architectural theorists of our time. Gaining early recognition for his Manifesto de l’Architecture Mobile, he is best-known for his sketches of the Ville Spatiale, or Spatial City, which applied the core concepts of the manifesto to create mutable “superstructures” over existing cities. The Spatial City represents an important thread running throughout Friedman’s work: He has always sought to provide people with the structures within which to construct and reconstruct their own environment, be it within the slums of the Third World or modern Western cities.

Résumé:
The Spanish architect Rafael Moneo has won numerous awards (including the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize), yet this publication is the first to offer a critical study of his career as a whole—not only his many built works and projects but also his contributions to teaching and his writings. The book begins with a comprehensive biography, covering Moneo’s education, teaching appointments, and encounters with historians and architects in Europe and the United States, such as Peter Eisenman, Jørn Utzon, and Bruno Zevi. Also included is a discussion of some of the buildings that he has designed, notably the Prado Museum extension and Atocha Station in Madrid. The following section examines in more detail seven key buildings chosen to illustrate crucial developments in Moneo’s thinking, from the Bankinter, Madrid, to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles. The last a section considers his architectural philosophy: his design approach, his idea of the canon, his theory of composition, his notion of form, and his confrontation with reality—in construction and context.
