From a converted printing house in Rotterdam and the experimental minds therein that brought you the Pig City project (an analysis of the pork industry’s manufacturing conditions) comes KM3, another contribution from the iconoclastic idea lab and architecture firm MVRDV. The office, which for more than a decade has been studying density as it relates to contemporary life and architecture, bases its theories for the uses of space on complex data. Classic projects include the gravity-defying WoZoCo home for the eldery in Amsterdam, the headquarters for public broadcasting company VPRO in Hilversum, the Dutch pavilion for World Expo 2000 in Hanover, and the Housing Silo in Amsterdam. The firm’s buildings overthrow the primacy of an architectural "footprint" for more innovative and varied spatial paradigms. A follow-up to the publication of FARMAX, which sought to question and analyze the growing suburban "greyness" of the Netherlands and to propose new ways of thinking about the homogenization of landscape, KM3 extends that idea to a three-dimensional model, one that "generates space instead of consuming it" and encourages variety in form. This book explores three different strategies each in Rotterdam and Amsterdam on their spatial and technical capacity for creating a "3D city," one of cantilevers and underground connections, airiness and, most of all, diverse spaces. This is thinking at the forefront of a new urbanism. DVD with software and films included.

Hans Hollein (1934–2014), Austria’s only Pritzker Prize laureate and a self-proclaimed avant-gardist of the 1960s, was a meticulous curator of his own work throughout his life. At the same time, the reception of this work was often overshadowed by Hollein’s immense personality. "Hollein calling: Architectural dialogues" explores the Hollein phenomenon from a contemporary perspective. In dialogue with the positions of a younger generation, this book revaluates and brings back into the current discourse Hollein’s thinking and designs. The first part offers interviews with fifteen European firms in which they talk about their relationship to Hollein and his oeuvre, ranging from profound knowledge or selective admiration of specific aspects to skepticism and criticism. Topics such as cultural identity, visual worlds, design tools, and architecture as an independent cultural production run as a thread through these conversations. The second part features a selection of Hollein’s buildings through sketches, models, photographs, prototypes, and documents from the Archive Hans Hollein, Az W and MAK, Vienna—many of which are published here for the first time—as well as new contextualizing texts. The two sections are connected by a grid of key terms formed from pertinent texts and images.

Cette publication témoigne de l’esprit qui animait l’Atelier Pierre Thibault au moment de la conception de la Fondation Grantham (2015-2019); projet architectural qui s’inscrit dans la continuité de la maison des Abouts (2001-2005), sise sur le lot voisin. Dans son texte, Lesley Johnstone décrit ce lieu magique qui entoure les deux bâtiments, conçus sur une période de quinze ans par Pierre Thibault et dont Michel Paradis et Bernard Landriault, cofondateurs de la Fondation Grantham, en sont les propriétaires. On parle d’un lieu où les artistes, les architectes et les chercheur·euse·s sont invité·e·s à contribuer à la réflexion en permanente évolution sur les relations entre l’art et l’environnement. Publié à l’occasion de l’exposition Pierre Thibault : Habiter le lieu, présentée du 9 septembre au 5 novembre 2023 à la Fondation Grantham pour l’art et l’environnement, cet ouvrage rassemble des dessins, des croquis, des aquarelles de Pierre Thibault, architecte québécois de renommée internationale et un essai de Lesley Johnstone, commissaire de l’exposition. Cette publication témoigne de l’esprit qui animait l’Atelier Pierre Thibault au moment de la conception de la Fondation Grantham (2015-2019); projet architectural qui s’inscrit dans la continuité de la maison des Abouts (2001-2005), sise sur le lot voisin. Dans son texte, Lesley Johnstone décrit ce lieu magique qui entoure les deux bâtiments, conçus sur une période de quinze ans par Pierre Thibault et dont Michel Paradis et Bernard Landriault, cofondateurs de la Fondation Grantham, en sont les propriétaires. On parle d’un lieu où les artistes, les architectes et les chercheur·euse·s sont invité·e·s à contribuer à la réflexion en permanente évolution sur les relations entre l’art et l’environnement.
