Résumé:
"Once upon a China" is an unconventional architectural story of great beauty, empathy, honour and sadness. The chapters are reimaginations of "Dream of the red mansion," "Journey to the West ," "The water margin," and "Romance of the three kingdoms," and are conceived as specific themes of Chinese identity: domesticity, consumerism, democracy and adaptability. These four seminal pre-modern fictions contain diverse voices and philosophical perspectives on history as well as satires that have defined past developments of Chinese societies, politics and the built environment. Comics is an unorthodox but extraordinary medium for architectural speculations. The eccentric characteristics of comic-inspired drawings in this book enrich the processes of conception and conceptualisation of design – their fragmented yet sequential nature proves versatile in the imagination of spatial experiences, enabling the complex stories of place, brief and building to materialise. At the same time, the politicisation of architecture through comics engenders a sense of optimism to reappraise Chinese design futures and critical thinking beyond the exuberance of non-contextual Western capitalist models.

N-ground or multi-ground (Superground & Underground) concept applied to Seoul, call us to a new qualitative development that responds to the possibility to superimpose a new dense floor in the old infrastructures. A new ReCitying Topos on, inside, in, where and through which to develop new/old programs, uses and activities of life and relationship. The singularity of Seoul is the capacity for the city to combine and manage all the new global urban paradigmatic challenges. Seoul new qualitative development responds does not intend to "continue" or "recreate" the traditional city. Nor impose or positionate, transforming it, built machines or objects but superimpose a new dense floor (container and articulator at the same time) in the old obsolete infrastructures, that becomes a new Re-Citying. The old infrastructures are revealed as the ideal spaces to support these new floors, real and virtual at time.

Résumé:
In this book, architect François Blanciak surveys the robotic faces omnipresent in Tokyo buildings, offering an architectural taxonomy based not on the usual variables—size, material, historical style—but on the observable expressions of buildings. Are the eyes (windows) twinkling, the mouth (door) laughing? Is that balcony a howl of distress? Investigating robot aesthetics through his photographs of fifty buildings, Blanciak argues that the robot face originated in architecture—before the birth of robotics—and has played a central role in architectural history. Part photographic survey, part theoretical inquiry, the publication upends the usual approach to robotics in architecture by considering not the automation of architectural output but the aesthetic properties of the robot.

Résumé:
The articulation of transitional space forms a key element in Japanese architecture and its relationship to landscape. Climate and cultural history have shaped myriad forms and expressions of these spaces, which connect as well as separate. We pass through or dwell within them; these transitional spaces differentiate between one space and another, inside and outside, public and private, our body and what surrounds it. This issue of Pamphlet documents a conversation about six residential houses in Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo. The houses and their surroundings were captured through sound recordings and Point Cloud laser scanning, the results of which were processed into short videos.

Résumé:
Established as beachheads of foreign influence along coastal China during the mid-nineteenth century, the twelve Treaty Ports – Shanghai, Dalian, Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Hankou, Harbin, Nanjing, Ningbo, Shantou, Tianjin, Tsingtao and Xiamen – can be considered from a number of perspectives. This book examines the evolving contextual changes in the Treaty Ports over the past 150 years. It illustrates through writing and line sketches, the imprints on the modernizing cities of older places and spaces from these early times, which have left a residue of physical traces in terms of plan forms, streets and building groups.
