In the decades after World War II, from just prior to the revolution and into the mid-1980s, modernist architecture blossomed in Cuba, attracting both native talent and leading international architects from Europe. Havana Modern examines Cuban modernism’s highlights with a wealth of archival materials, photos and new scholarship. Edited by Rubén Gallo—author of Mexican Modernity (2005), Freud’s Mexico (2010) and Proust’s Latin Americans (2014)—the volume is arranged in 10 chapters authored by current and former Princeton faculty members and graduate students. Ítala Fulvia Villa (1913–1991), the project’s architect, was one of Argentina’s first female architects and urban planners, a pioneer of South American modernism who also contributed to Le Corbusier’s master plan for Buenos Aires. "Designing Detroit: Wirt Rowland and the Rise of Modern American Architecture" begins with a brief overview of Rowland’s early life and career. Author Michael G. Smith goes on to analyze Rowland’s achievements in building design and as a leader of Detroit’s architectural community throughout both World Wars and the Great Depression. The interdependence of architecture with the city’s fluctuating economic prosperity and population growth is explored, illuminating the conditions for good architecture and the arts in general. The author identifies the influence of Jay Hambidge’s "dynamic symmetry" in Rowland’s work and how it allowed him to employ color as a modern replacement for traditional ornamentation, leading to the revolutionary design of the Union Trust (Guardian) Building, for which he receives nearly unanimous praise in national media. Exposed Architecture offers an overview of work by young architects in Latin America. Published in collaboration with LIGA, Space for Architecture in Mexico City, it is broken into three parts. The first documents, through images and brief texts, exhibitions that twelve firms from Argentina, Brazil/Uruguay, Chile, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, and from Portugal created at LIGA’s exhibition space in Mexico.
