Bettina Götz, the commissioner of the Austrian exhibit at the 11th architecture Biennale di Venezia, discusses the "Before Architecture" theme of the exhibition with three key case studies. Volume 1: Josef Lackner (1931–2000), whose uncompromising approach to architecture is examined in five of his buildings. PAUHOF (Michael Hofstätter, born in 1953, and Wolfgang Pauzenberger, born in 1955), whose conceptual work methods link utopias with reality creating added social value. In volume 2, the German architecture theorist and sociologist Werner Sewing explores the issue of residential construction as a neglected field of work in terms of perception and theory. His exploration of this subject in discussion with seven Austrian architecture offices also researches common practices in this field. The beautifully crafted, two-volume catalog in a slipcase is an enduring documentation of this subject.

Résumé:
Over the last years, coinciding with the growing social movement that aims for the introduction of a real environmental sensitivity in the European society, a new generation of architects has appeared in Spain. They plan and built using passive design strategies, use techniques to reduce both water consumption and waste production and even generate energy from the active use of renewable energies. Selected projects included: Botanical Garden of Montjuic in Barcelona and the Western Beach Promenade in Benidorm (Alicante), by Carlos Ferrater; the Spanish Pavilion at the Expo 2005 Aichi (Japan), by Farshid Moussavi and Alejandro Zaera, as well as the Spanish Pavilion at the Expo Zaragoza 2008, by Franciso J. Mangado and Florencio Manteca; the Hesperia Tower Hotel, by Alonso Balaguer Asociados and Richard Roger Partnership, and the Habitat Hotel in Barcelona, by Ruiz Geli, Vito Acconci and Ruy Ohtake; and the new head offices of Endesa and Telefónica in Madrid, both projected by Rafael de La-Hoz.

Résumé:
In the first half of the twentieth century, a new kind of architecture appeared across Europe and North America, characterized by plain, often pure white walls; wide windows; flat roofs; and prominent balconies, terraces, and roof gardens. From houses to hospitals, the new architecture featured large expanses of glass and was constructed from steel and reinforced concrete—or designed to look that way—and inspired by a desire to be functional, hygienic, universal, democratic, and economical.
