The Media House Project is the fruit of a strategic alliance between the Metapolis Group from Barcelona, the MIT Media Lab, and the Fundacio Politecnica de Catalunya, with the collaboration of the Consortium I2CAT and the Elisava Design School, in order to build a prototype of an informational house. This project enables the testing of the progression of information technologies beyond that of computers and integrates them into everyday life, literally looking to build computers from the components of buildings, in such a way that the logical intelligence of a structure can grow with its physical form.

Résumé:
More than four decades of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe has left deep scars in Europe. The post-1945 cultural fixation of countries in Central and Eastern Europe on the USSR stands in sharp contrast with Western Europes orientation towards the United States. The contradistinctions and similarities between East and West are subject to critical examination in a series of essays in text and image. Many of these subsidiary themes are associated with the city, since the impact of Communism is nowhere more evident than in this urban space. In the planning euphoria and the building of a completely new society on rational and scientific principles we can glimpse a mirroring of the ideas and views of Communist politicians, architects and urban planners. The contemporary phenomenon of the shrinking city calls for solutions which extend beyond restructuring, conservation or regeneration; it is sooner about constructing an identity that can rival Europe and the rest of the world.

Résumé:
The Pan Am Building and the reaction to it signalled the end of an era. Begun when the modernist aesthetic and the architectural star system ruled architectural theory and practice, the completed building became a symbol of modernism's fall from grace. In “The Pan Am Building and the Shattering of the Modernist Dream”, Meredith Clausen tells the story as both history and cautionary tale -- a case study of how not to plan and execute a large-scale urban project that seems especially relevant in light of the World Trade Center and the ongoing discussions over what should be built in its place. The Pan Am Building was despised by many as soon as the plans were announced in 1958. The star power of the celebrity architects -- those deans of modernism, Walter Gropius and Pietro Belluschi -- overrode critics' objections. When construction was completed in 1963, it became more than an architectural question; this "mute, massive, over-scaled octagonal slab," as Clausen describes it, built over Grand Central Terminal, blocked the view down Park Avenue, created deep shadows where there had been sunlight, and poured 25,000 office workers on the sidewalks each morning and evening. As Clausen tells it, the story of the building -- which was undistinguished architecturally but important because of its location and its moment in history -- encompasses the end of modernism's social idealism, the decline of Gropius's and Belluschi's reputations, the victory of private interests over public good, the revival of architectural criticism in the press (both Ada Louise Huxtable and Jane Jacobs emerged as prominent and influential critics), the birth of the historic preservation movement, and the changing culture and politics of New York City.

Résumé:
RMIT's relationship with Tokyo Institute of Technology began in 1994 with a joint research project in the City of Ogaki in Gifu Prefecture. That project was part of RMIT School of Architecture's continuing commitment to an engagement with the urbanism of its region. "By-Product-Tokyo" is the outcome of a new chapter in this dialogue with TITech. The project was instigated by Shane Murray in 1999 with the receipt of a grant to fund student exchange from the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific Association. Nigel Bertram and Marika Neustupny developed the three-month project in Tokyo. This book is itself a by-product of Tokyo, and its contemporary thought. It is an unexpected offshoot of an ongoing line of architectural research being undertaken by a group of Japanese architects and students centred at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Résumé:
Today, architecture schools are truly international in their intake, as students are able to select from courses worldwide. For school leavers and undergraduates, the choice is bewildering. Where different institutions provide very different courses and ultimately very different architects, the very act of shopping for a degree is an incredibly important stage in an architecture student’s career. This book is set to become a touchstone publication for anyone involved in architectural education, from the academic to the aspiring student. It provides interviews with four of the most influential educators/heads of schools around the world: Peter Cook, Chair, the Bartlett School of Architecture, London, UK; Bernard Tschumi, Dean, School of Architecture at Columbia University, USA; Leon van Schaik, Innovation Professor of Architecture, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia; Elia Zenghelis, Berlage, Dusseldorf. This is followed by short self-biographies of eleven further prominent figures including Rem Koolhaas, Anthony Vidler and Paul Virilio. It is the first publication of its kind to comprehensively cover architectural education in its current context as an international market. It will feature the first invaluable listing of architectural schools worldwide: no dedicated listing currently exists in printed form or on the web, giving students a useful reference from which to start the decision making process.
