Résumé:
In the next few years, emerging practices in interactive architecture are set to transform the built environment. Whereas 'smart' design was once regarded as the preserve of museum exhibit or Jumbotrom advertising screens, 'multi-mediated' interactive design has now entered every domain of public and private life. As a spatial medium, interactive design is revolutionising and reinventing our homes, as well as our work and leisure spaces. Essays and interviews by international commentators Lucy Bullivant, guest editor of the issue, Ole Bouman, Antonino Saggio, Stefano Mirti and Walter Aprile and Mike Weinstock on the cultural issues raised by the emergence of interactive architecture will be complemented with features on acclaimed practitioners Christian Moller, Tobi Schneidler, Ron Arad and Jason Bruges. Benchmark interactive projects in this issue evolving new models of interdisciplinary teamwork include The Media House, led by Metapolis, IaaC and the MIT Media Lab and projects conceived at the Interactive Institute, Ivrea, Italy. New work is also featured by KDa/Toshio Iwai; realities: united, Usman Haque, Adam Somlai-Fischer, Ben Rubin and Mark Hansen, Lars Spuybroek and the Institute of Neuro-Informatics, ETH, Zurich, Kitchen Rogers Design; IDEO, and Tom Barker, b consultants/SmartSlab.

"100 Copenhagen typologies" presents 100 examples of re-use, adaptation and mixed-use architecture. In this book, Martin Marker and his students from The Royal Danish Academy - Architecture, Design, Conservation at the Institute of Architecture, Urbanism and Landscape - BA Programme investigate Copenhagen as a Wunderkammer of architectural typologies. Leaving the focus on materiality and visual aesthetics aside, the book explores how programmatic complexities and existing structures can form foundations for future urbanism in a rapidly changing world with a growing population, climate changes, and limited resources. This book extends a welcoming invitation to explore and examine our urban structures, sparking a vital conversation that encourage a fresh perspective on our existing typologies, ensuring their continued relevance for the people who inhabit them.

Résumé:
"Prishtina in 53 Buildings" draws a multifaceted portrait of Kosovo’s capital city by using architecture as a prism to understand political, cultural and economic processes. Essays on fifty-three built structures, written by different authors with different geographical background and different professional perspective, add up to multilayered account of the city’s history and present. "Prishtina in 53 Buildings" is more than a guide book for visitors or residents of the city. Buildings are not only the materialization of design principles or architectonic ideas, but the outcome of socio-economic processes. The built environment is constantly re-appropriated, re-interpreted and re-valuated as architects do not have the final say as to the meaning and the function of an edifice. By conceptualizing architecture as materialization of societal processes, "Prishtina in 53 Buildings" pushes beyond notions that assume an intrinsic and coherent "logic" of cities. The editors Donika Luzhnica and Jonas König show that a polyphonic approach is more apposite to depict the often-contradictory trajectories of urban development.

Résumé:
"Ceci n'est pas un portrait" is a possible comprehensive depiction of the production of a new generation of Portuguese practices. The publication brings together a collection of more than 300 photographs by Francisco Ascensão illustrating about 70 projects made by young architecture offices in Portugal."Today, it is nearly impossible to distinguish architectural schools or styles. Regional schools are homogenized by a universal system of education and references, temporal periodization is absorbed by the ‘contemporary’. In the book there is no claim about a certain tendency. The absence of captions is programmatic. Rather than competing for clients and attention the images show a culture of generosity and mutual curiosity, a culture of openness and collectivity, immediacy and care, optimism and liveliness. A new beginning." - Philip Ursprung, 2024

Résumé:
A former debris-strewn wasteland in the inner city—some 300 out of 343 residential buildings were destroyed during the Second World War—the Hansaviertel is one of the most defining architecture projects of the postwar period in Berlin. In 1952, an international ideas competition was held under the title die stadt von morgen (the city of tomorrow); more than fifty architects presented plans for the rebuilding of West Berlin, including leading practitioners of Western modernist architecture like Alvar Aalto, Werner Düttmann, Egon Eiermann, Walter Gropius, Arne Jacobsen, Oscar Niemeyer, and Max Taut. Construction based on their designs in the redevelopment area began in 1956. The result was a neighborhood designed for people and their needs—largely without predetermined paths, with lots of greenery, flexible floor plans, space for small businesses, and facilities for everyday needs. Visiting the area and its people today, one can still feel the designers’ visionary resolve to establish new ways of residential living. Locals are united by their fascination with architecture and design and their love for their neighborhood, which over the decades has developed an authentic patina and now stands as witness to a key chapter in the city’s more recent history.

Résumé:
Soon after its inception in 1928, as part of Public Works, the Department of Physical Planning began work on Van Eesteren's General Extension Plan for Amsterdam (AUP). Issued in 1934, the AUP can be regarded as Amsterdam's first master plan. It fixed the broad lines of city policy on spatial development in a vision statement on the city. Vision statements and the plans they spawn are necessarily centred on the future, but with hindsight such master plans tell us more about the time when they were made. This certainly holds true for the eight such plans that were to follow the AUP. The most recent, 'Opting for Urbanity', was completed in 2003, by the Physical Planning Department. Something new, whether this is a residential estate or a business park, is invariably at the expense of something existing. Seventy-five years after the AUP was issued, the fitting out of urban space for dwelling, working, traffic and recreation is still a subject of discussion. How the space is filled in determines the urban dynamic. This book is not just about the Amsterdam masterplans but more particularly about three-quarters of a century of spatial development in that city. Words, images and a series of maps specially made for the occasion clearly show what has been happening in the inner areas and garden city suburbs of Amsterdam, the urban expansions and consolidations, the plans for traffic and transport, and for greenspace and recreation.
