With this work in the form of a book, Maria Lalou & Skafte Aymo-Boot present the phenomenon of a particular pending architecture mutely present all over Athens. The concrete skeletons of polykatoikia – multi-story apartment buildings – are emblematic of the development of modern Greece throughout the second half of the twentieth century. The book deals with the politics of urban space by treating the unfinished buildings as study objects and tracing their individual histories. Through the words of current owners and by means of photographs, archival documents and found artefacts, a different chronicle of the development of modern Arthens is taking shape.

Résumé:
Contemporary Athens is characterized by a building type that transformed the Greek capital into a modern metropolis within a few decades in the 20th century: the polykatoikia, a small-scale urban apartment block. For almost forty years the unchallenged residential ideal for all social classes, the polykatoikia by the end of the century had become synonymous with the rushed mass production of the postwar period and inhospitable living conditions in the inner city. This book sets out to trace the architectural origins of this typology. For the first time, it provides a comprehensive examination of the architectural concepts developed by Greek architects for the polykatoikia.

Résumé:
Since the foundation of the country in 1830, architecture in Belgium has been an expression of the key issues of modern Western societies. In "Something completely different," Christophe Van Gerrewey uses this small European country as a case study to describe, interpret, and criticize more universal spatial problems and behaviors. In seven wide-ranging essays, he looks at the activities of architects from the past two centuries to better understand political evolutions, social gaps, aesthetic considerations, housing and planning, transport and infrastructure, order and chaos, and culture and ecology. The result is a literary text full of surprises and discoveries, showing both the shortcomings and the merits of what architects do.

Résumé:
This publication explores a paradigm shift in architecture, transitioning from abstract design to the artistry of construction and materials. Drawing its inspiration from the exhibition ‘'SUPER DANISH – Art and Craftsmanship in New Danish Architecture'’ in Aalborg, it delves into the innovative works of Danish architects who embrace resource-conscious practices. From detailed precision to elegantly weathered creations, these architects showcase a merger of sculptural form and material poetry. Contributing architects include Johansen Skovsted Arkitekter, Panum & Kappel, Lynge Lynge Arkitekter, Reværk, Hahn Lavsens, Jespersen Nødtvedt, Noaa, and several more.

Résumé:
In 2016, an article in The New York Times with a probing title: “Why Brussels Is the New Berlin?” brought mainstream confirmation of a trend Brussels has been undergoing, with international artists flocking into the city, and galleries and art events following. As with so many other cities that have experienced similar trends, there are many reasons for this cultural flourishing, but they can be broken down to the simple conditions of the city itself: it is cosmopolitan and cheap. And there is available space. Beyond the visible art venues – museums and galleries, theatres and concert halls, established institutions, or converted industrial spaces – there is space where artists can live and work, go out and exchange ideas. The production of culture happens (also) in clubs and salons, offices and lofts, studios and ateliers. Our aim was to investigate these spaces and identify an urban prerequisite for such an elusive category as culture. Furthermore, we wanted to examine how spatial types can be appropriated for a new (cultural) practice.

Résumé:
The Technical Schools complex in Groningen was designed in 1922 by the then director of technical education, civil engineer Jan Gerko Wiebenga, in collaboration with the Rotterdam architect Leendert Cornelis van der Vlugt. The original complex comprised a secondary and a junior secondary technical school plus two rows of workshops and laboratories and various outbuildings in between. Wiebenga’s decision to construct the schools in concrete was unusual in that at the time this method of construction was considered suitable only for industrial buildings. The materialization, column structure and window bands all gave the building an unprecedentedly modern appearance. Over the years, the buildings have been radically altered, partially demolished and extended. The Wiebenga complex has recently been renovated, restored and completely adapted to modern educational requirements. Every effort was made to enhance the identity of the original buildings of what is now officially recognized as a modern national monument and the architectural design of the conversion is closely related to the principles of the original concept.
