Résumé:
This is the first publication on the Prague Werkbund Housing Estate "Baba", a symbol of architectural Modernism in the Czech Republic. Up until the fall of the Iron Curtain, the housing estate "Baba" in Prague was a little-known tip. This was the last building exhibition which the Werkbund set up in Europe in 1932 and symbolises an entire era, vividly depicting Modern Architecture in the Czech Republic, which has gained growing international recognition since 1989. Three generations of architects were active here; the older generation, still influenced by Cubism, include Janak and Gocar; the middle generation, whose works were purist and functionalist, include Linhart and Stary; and the younger generation, for example, Ladislav Zak, who with their sweeping forms wished to distance themselves from 'white functionalism'. With copious, unpublished source material, this book analyses for the first time the particular status which the Prague Housing Estate has in architectural history. It addresses architectural and sociopolitical topics, documents the individual projects and looks at the circumstances of the private clients.

Résumé:
In the Tyrol region of Austria, amid the traditional wood-frame country residences, an innovative style of architecture has recently become preeminent. Current construction no longer has the massive, provincial look customary in this region, but instead projects a cosmopolitan flair that reflects contemporary international trends. This confident art of building employs a more modern architectural language, and uses steel, glass, and concrete as well as wood to achieve its aims. This title examines the work of a younger generation of architects practicing in the Tyrol. These buildings are of a remarkable variety and complexity, and range from more traditional family homes and apartment buildings to unusual designs for kindergardens, schools, footbridges, firehouses, and supermarkets. The author is the editor-in-chief of "Architektur aktuell", a bilingual magazine on international architecture focusing on Austria.

Résumé:
The Escuelas Nacionales de Arte (National Art Schools), constructed from 1961 to 1965, were the result of an educational program initiated by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara soon after the Revolution of 1959. The architects they commissioned created an organic complex of brick and terra-cotta Catalan vaulted structures that reflected the optimism and exuberance of the period. The schools attempted to reinvent architecture, just as the Revolution hoped to reinvent society. However, even before construction was completed, the schools fell out of official favor and were subjected to an attack that resulted in their subsequent "disappearance." An ideological campaign branded them politically incorrect, a bourgeois luxury that was not in keeping with the Revolution. The buildings fell into disuse and, abandoned to the jungle, were literally overgrown. Now, almost 40 years later, Cuba is beginning to recognize and reclaim these significant works of architecture. Revolution of Forms investigates the history and politics surrounding the creation of these structures as well as their subsequent abandonment. The text is accompanied by archival photographs, plans, and images of the present condition of these structures.
