Résumé:
A former debris-strewn wasteland in the inner city—some 300 out of 343 residential buildings were destroyed during the Second World War—the Hansaviertel is one of the most defining architecture projects of the postwar period in Berlin. In 1952, an international ideas competition was held under the title die stadt von morgen (the city of tomorrow); more than fifty architects presented plans for the rebuilding of West Berlin, including leading practitioners of Western modernist architecture like Alvar Aalto, Werner Düttmann, Egon Eiermann, Walter Gropius, Arne Jacobsen, Oscar Niemeyer, and Max Taut. Construction based on their designs in the redevelopment area began in 1956. The result was a neighborhood designed for people and their needs—largely without predetermined paths, with lots of greenery, flexible floor plans, space for small businesses, and facilities for everyday needs. Visiting the area and its people today, one can still feel the designers’ visionary resolve to establish new ways of residential living. Locals are united by their fascination with architecture and design and their love for their neighborhood, which over the decades has developed an authentic patina and now stands as witness to a key chapter in the city’s more recent history.

Résumé:
When the property to the south of Rudolph M. Schindler’s historic house and studio on Kings Road in Los Angeles was sold to the developer of a 3-story, 18-unit condominium complex, a question urgently emerged: How does one build next to the Schindler House? To incite the exchange of ideas on the Schindler House problem, the MAK Center at the Schindler House initiated an architectural invitational in which architects were asked to envision a companion to Schindler’s masterwork. Juried by a distinguished international panel, entries were solicited from a roster of both established and young architects. Proposals were contributed by architect teams COOP HIMMEL(B)LAU, Vienna, Christophe Cornubert, PUSH, Los Angeles, Eichinger oder Knechtl, Vienna, Peter Eisenman, New York, Andrea Lenardin-Madden, Los Angeles, Durfee/Regn, Los Angeles, Günther Domenig, Graz, Eric Owen Moss, Los Angeles, Dominique Perrault, Paris, Odile Decq + Benoît Cornette, Paris, Zaha Hadid, London, Georg Driendl, Vienna, Michael Rotondi, Los Angeles, Klaus Stattmann, Vienna, Sandrine von Klot, Vienna, Lebbeus Woods, New York, Bernhard Sommer, Vienna, Mark Mack, Los Angeles, Umbrella Organization, Los Angeles, and The Next Enterprise, Vienna. "Architectural Resistance: Contemporary Architects Face Schindler Today" presents each of their 20 proposals in the context of a discussion about architecture, urban change, site, and historic preservation.

Résumé:
Soon after its inception in 1928, as part of Public Works, the Department of Physical Planning began work on Van Eesteren's General Extension Plan for Amsterdam (AUP). Issued in 1934, the AUP can be regarded as Amsterdam's first master plan. It fixed the broad lines of city policy on spatial development in a vision statement on the city. Vision statements and the plans they spawn are necessarily centred on the future, but with hindsight such master plans tell us more about the time when they were made. This certainly holds true for the eight such plans that were to follow the AUP. The most recent, 'Opting for Urbanity', was completed in 2003, by the Physical Planning Department. Something new, whether this is a residential estate or a business park, is invariably at the expense of something existing. Seventy-five years after the AUP was issued, the fitting out of urban space for dwelling, working, traffic and recreation is still a subject of discussion. How the space is filled in determines the urban dynamic. This book is not just about the Amsterdam masterplans but more particularly about three-quarters of a century of spatial development in that city. Words, images and a series of maps specially made for the occasion clearly show what has been happening in the inner areas and garden city suburbs of Amsterdam, the urban expansions and consolidations, the plans for traffic and transport, and for greenspace and recreation.

Résumé:
"Inhabiting Identity" is the fifth in an annual series of publications featuring the best young architects as selected by The Architectural League of New York. For this year's competition, architects were asked to explore how technology has altered our sense of space. Their answers not only challenge our sense of habitation but teach us to think beyond the normal and the mundane. This year's winners of the competition—Stephanie Forsythe and Todd MacAllen, Steven Mankouche, Ben Checkwitch, Stella Betts, Lisa Hsieh, and Mike Latham—make use of unusual materials (wooden shipping pallets) while maintaining creative ideas (mobile rooms) in their investigations of the role of modern technology in our daily lives.
