Résumé:
Some, like the Tasmanian tiger, are considered extinct--yet sightings are still reported. Some, like the giant squid, existed only as rumors until hard evidence finally appeared. And then there are the others, who roam a shadowy realm between myth, hucksterism and science--for example, Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster. Cryptozoology is the quest for unidentified and elusive species, and as such is often treated as a marginalized science more akin to farcical adventure. However, the subject makes for a perfectly fascinating zone of inquiry for contemporary artists interested in the fertile edges of the history of science and museums, taxonomy, myth, spectacle and fraud. Cryptozoology: Out of Time Place Scale mines the theoretical and design terrains of the twenty-first-century graphic novel and the medieval curio cabinet or Wunderkammer, exploring cryptozoology in art and popular culture. Originally exhibited at Maine's Bates College Museum of Art, it begins with Mark Dion's installation of a bureaucratic government agency, the Federal Wildlife Commission's Department of Cryptozoology, Bureau for the Investigation of Paranormal Phenomena and National Institute of Comparative Astrobiology, and features drawings, paintings, dioramas, taxidermy and performative photos by artists Rachel Berwick, Sarina Brewer, Walmor Correa, Ellen Lesperance, Robert Marbury, Jill Miller, Vic Muniz, Jeanine Oleson, Rosamond Purcell, Alexis Rockman, Marc Swanson, Jeffrey Vallance and Jamie Wyeth.

Résumé:
Beirut had been a renowned resort and a center of culture and style for hundreds of years, when, in the late twentieth century, it became the site of terrible violence and trauma. More than 15 years after the official end of Lebanon's civil war in 1990, political instability, bombings and assassinations still dominate the international headlines, obscuring years of swift change. In that time, Beirut became fertile ground for radical and innovative art-making and critical thought. "Out of Beirut" introduces new and recent work by artists who have been at the forefront of that activity, and who, in this new time of turmoil and change, will be watching Beirut's fate closely, chronicling it, and perhaps by their responses, changing it. With work by Fadi Abdallah, Gilbert Hage, Heartland, Bernard Khoury, Rabib Mroué, Walid Raad, Walid Sadek, Jalal Toufic, Paola Yacoub and Michel Lasserre and Akram Zaatari, among others.

Collage is an artistic language comprising found images, fragmentary forms, and unexpected juxtapositions. While it first gained status as high art in the early twentieth century, the past decade has seen a fresh explosion of artists using this dynamic and experimental approach to image making. Organised in an A-Z sequence by artist, the book features both well-known collagists, and a plethora of lesser-known names deserving of greater attention. Taking a broad definition – from analog cut-and-paste compositions and photomontages to digital composed imagery and animations – Vitamin C+ showcases 108 living artists who employ collage as a central part of their visual-art practice, as selected by 69 leading experts, including museum directors, curators, critics, and collectors. The survey also features an engaging and informative introduction by Yuval Etgar, an internationally renowned expert in the area.

Résumé:
The research exhibition ''BioMedia: The age of media with life-like behavior'' at ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe presents works that intersect the realms of art, science, and technology. The media systems on show, which range from digital, computer-generated, and computer-simulated systems to complex adaptive robots and interactive installations, simulate various different aspects of life beyond movement and raise fundamental questions about the interaction between human and non-human beings and what inorganic life might mean in the future. The term ''BioMedia'' or biomimetic media is used here to refer to media that exhibit life-like forms of behaviour. Over sixty artists have contributed works illustrating the exhibition themes. The book accompanying the show focuses on the artworks, which are described in detail in richly illustrated texts.

What use can we make today of a prints collection dating between the 16th and 19th century housed in a library storage room? What does it tell us of the periods in which it was created, preserved and reorganised? How can this information relate to the contemporary? Can an artist re-enact shared scenarios emphasising what of the old persists in the present? This publication collects three years' work within present_continuous, a project aimed at enhancing a collection of prints housed at the Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria in Turin. A still rather unexplored point of excellence in the institution’s holdings, which was organised in albums in the 1860s by the eclectic Piedmontese collector and connoisseur Giovanni Volpato. The project includes a cataloguing campaign, a symposium whose purpose was to renew the contemporary perception of the archive and in an international call was opened in order to select two artists – Alessandra Messali and Ryts Monet (Enrico De Napoli) – for a residency program dedicated to creating new perspectives, right from the collection of print, trying to voicing the social and cultural issues of our time.
