Résumé:
In the late 1970s Ellsworth Kelly (1923–2015) was commissioned by architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill to create an artwork for the lobby of a new office building underway in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. Kelly responded with one of his most ambitious artworks to date, ''Color Panels for a Large Wall,'' an 18-panel painting executed in two versions. The larger, at over 125 feet wide, was the biggest painting he had ever made, and its trajectory would pass through not just Cincinnati but also Amsterdam, New York and Munich before ending up at its permanent home, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, where it has been prominently installed in the I.M. Pei–designed East Building since 2004.The smaller version, over 30 feet wide, remained in the artist's possession. This catalog tells the complete story of these two remarkable paintings.

Résumé:
Los Angeles–based Grey Crawford (born 1951) produced the photo series ''El Mirage'' in the southern Mojave Desert in 1975–78. Influenced early on by the forms of fellow artists Ellsworth Kelly and Frank Stella, and later by land artists such as Michael Heizer and Gordon Matta-Clark, Crawford's work features minimalist structures made of glass and steel. These abstract works focus on the artist's interventions in nature and architecture that seek to extend the limits of photography into land art and hard-edged abstraction. Crawford's day-to-day job working as a photographer for architects reveals its payoff in the work's smart presentation of its difficult subject. Besides the black-and-white photos that Crawford is famous for, this volume also contains Crawford's experiments in colour photography.

Résumé:
In the late 1960s, Lee Lozano (1930–99) conceived of and executed a series of "language pieces," written in the pages of her notebooks, consisting of rules and parameters for the actions that would constitute a piece. From offering money to houseguests to smoking as much marijuana as possible, Lozano boldly tested social norms, culminating in two of her most famous works: ''General Strike Piece'' (1969), which saw her retreating from the art world completely, and ''Decide to Boycott Women'' (1971), in which she ceased engaging with all members of her own gender. ''Lee Lozano: Language Pieces'' presents 46 of these pieces, reproducing them at full scale. Nearly five decades later, these radical manifestations of 1960s and '70s conceptualism continue to exert their political and artistic influence.

Résumé:
''A Cookbook of Invisible Writing,'' by Dutch artist, designer and teacher Amy Wu, is an introduction to analog steganography—a type of secret writing that is hidden in plain sight. This book serves as a starter pack to run workshops with groups who are interested in alternative forms of communication. It contains invisible ink recipes and other invisible communication techniques that may be used to subvert surveillance and bypass censorship, but also inspire your community to develop poetic and playful forms of communication to nurture social bonds. In the tradition of esoteric manuals published on secret writing, this cookbook also channels the spirit of everyday access and the easy distribution and sharing of practical knowledge. Following Giambattista della Porta’s 1558 popular science book Natural Magic—one of the first major publications that detailed simple but diverse recipes of invisible inks for public consumption—this cookbook aims to bring this obscure field to a wider audience. The publication includes a critical essay about the history of surveillance through a feminist and postcolonial lens.

Résumé:
One of the foremost American figurative painters of the 20th century, Alice Neel (1900–84) was a humanist—she was fascinated by people. Known for her daringly honest portraits, Neel loved to paint people in all their complexities—to penetrate and reveal their fears and anxieties. She also loved to paint the unadorned human figure. Her nudes, in particular, explore the body with frankness while celebrating the individuality of each of her subjects, and they exemplify the freedom and courage with which she approached her work and her life. This book documents the solo exhibition of the artist’s work at David Zwirner in New York in 2019. Including works that span the 1920s to the 1980s, this presentation focuses primarily on the nude figure whether male or female, adult or child and demonstrates how Neel rebelled against and challenged the traditional perceptions of sexuality, motherhood and beauty in our society.
