Contact, Olafur Eliasson’s inaugural exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, addresses the themes of light—or rather, darkness and shadows—space, and time in installations that create a visceral experience for the spectator. The book features critical essays, an interview between the artist and curators, and sketches and preparatory drawings. Résumé:
Born in New York in 1975, Taryn Simon is at the forefront of contemporary photography practice. Her artistic medium is based around three equal elements: photography, text, and graphic design, which combined investigate the limitations of absolute understanding, examining the gaps between each element and how this can lead to disorientation and ambiguity. In the last ten years she has created a suite of projects which deal with a number of theoretical and visual concerns. Her formal interest in arrangement and cataloguing has seen her experiment with different methods of presentation and display, particularly in A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters (2008-11) in which she travelled around the world researching bloodlines: splitting each work in the final piece up into three segments, she presented large portrait sequences of related individuals on the left, a text panel containing details and narratives in the centre, and 'footnote images' on the right of fragmented pieces of established narratives and other photographic evidence. Simon has also skilfully and poetically tackled aspects of the underbelly of American life. With new and re-published essays by amongst others Salman Rushdie, Homi Bhabha, Daniel Baumann, Tim Griffin, Tina Kuklieski, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Elisabeth Sussman. With an introduction by Simon Baker, Curator of Photography at Tate Modern.

A connoisseur of an astonishing array of subjects, Cornell’s captivation with bygone imagery encompassed astronomical charts and geographical maps, Italian and Spanish Old Master paintings, historical ballet, early film, literature, poetry, and ornithology. Most iconic among his works are his box constructions—microcosmic curiosity cabinets—filled with once-precious fragments that he collected in thrift shops in his native New York.

Résumé:
Danielle Aubert's Library of The Dispossessed examines the lived experience of one hundred used copies of "The Dispossessed", a 1974 science fiction novel by Ursula Le Guin. It takes the form of polyphonic group readings (during which each reader is reading from a different copy of the Library), a book of readers' marks, and an instrumental interpretation of the markings, composed by Jason Treuting of So Percussion and Mobius Percussion. The used, mass market paperback has little value. This particular volume — "The Dispossessed" — is available cheaply or for free as an e-book (Amazon), audio book (Audible), PDF or TeX file (Anarchist Library). Most of the books collected for The Library of the Dispossessed were purchased from online resellers. They are marked by previous owners (New Tecumseth Public Library, Kate Wilkins, Lee W. Smith); bear messages from past readers (“good move!,” “I’m going to vomit,” “don’t ever let yourself be owned”); and carry miscellaneous scraps of paper (a boarding pass, a reminder to pick up Jess at 9:00).

Best known for his large-scale wall paintings and installations, London-based contemporary German painter Lothar Götz's drawings now lie at the center of his practice and are an important resource for his wall paintings and installations. Built up of layers of juxtaposing colors, the drawings engage ideas of space and abstraction. This monograph assembles a selection of dense compositions on painted card and board made between 2009 and 2014 in which Götz explores the impact of thin pencil lines or varying colors and intensity on surfaces.

Résumé:
In this beautifully designed and sensuously illustrated hybrid artist book / exhibition document, New York based French artist Camille Henrot reconsiders source material and ideas from her Artist Research Fellowship at the Smithsonian, her 2013 video Grosse Fatigue and her installation The Pale Fox (2014 15), which was shown at several museums throughout Europe. The accompanying text by Henrot, in collaboration with Clara Meister and Michael Connor, forms the core of the book, and is in keeping with Henrot s characteristic approach to knowledge production and organization. An interview between the artist and social anthropologist Monique Jeudy-Ballini offers further insight into Henrot s mode of thinking and her fascination with anthropology. A natural continuation of her artistic practice, Elephant Child combines Henrot s research materials, photographic fragments, preparatory notes and sketches alongside color photographs of the artist s sculptures, video stills and installation images.

Résumé:
Berlin-based artist Olaf Holzapfel explores the interstices between art and craft by collaborating with local farmers and craftspeople to create sculptural work that interweaves human settlement, technique and abstraction. The handsome full-color exhibition catalog features both large site-specific installations consisting of hay, straw and wooden frameworks along with his smaller woven sculptures from his exhibition at the Lindenau-Museum Altenburg. Using space-generating methods like plaiting, weaving and latticing age-old settler techniques his sculptures don t differentiate between the manufactured and the handcrafted, the functional and the aesthetic. By transforming age-old handiwork into contemporary art, Holzapfel unsettles the division between nature and culture, tradition and modernity. A concluding essay by writer Jennifer Allen explores the pattern-making and abstraction in Holzapfel s work in relationship to Adolf Loos s influential 1908 essay Crime and Ornament.

Résumé:
A collaboration between sculptor Olaf Nicolai and photographer Heidi Specker, this artist book poetically captures Nicolai’s intervention during the reconstruction of the Bauhaus Masters’ Houses—once home to Moholy-Nagy, Kandinsky and Klee, among others—in Dessau. Coating the walls with marble dust with varying degrees of granulation to create geometrical patterns, Nicolai produced a subtle relief that responds to the homes changing light conditions. Specker in turn gives the camouflaged surfaces a heightened sense of presence through her photographic renderings that direct the viewer’s gaze to the interplay of contour, surface, space and light. In Nicolai and Specker’s joint publication, an aesthetic intervention in a reconstructed space finds another iteration through the medium of photography in book form. The soft cover and Chinese fold give this elegant artist book and abstract journey through an iconic space a supple, organic feel.OLAF NICOLAI & HEIDI SPECKER
