Résumé:
This is the first monograph dedicated to one of Italy's most enigmatic and complex artistic figures, Emilio Prini, a key figure of Arte Povera whose work has never been fully surveyed. Structured chronologically from 1966 to 2016, it examines his work via a systematic iconographic and bibliographic analysis of Prini's archives along with the institutions he exhibited at. As he considered the medium secondary to the concept, no distinction is made between installations, sculptures, invitations, posters, or documents; and by presenting the works first individually and then situated in different contexts, the book provides a unique insight into his particular methodology. Prini also consistently rejected the notion of the artwork as a closed and defined object, interrogating the very framework of the exhibition format.

Résumé:
Joseph Beuys (1921–1986) was one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century—and one of the most controversial. Working in Germany in the aftermath of World War II, he explored a radically expanded concept of art through a practice that ranged from performative actions to large-scale sculptural ensembles. While some contemporaries found his claim that “everyone is an artist” liberating, even revolutionary, others accused him of fostering a dangerous cult of personality. In "Joseph Beuys and History", the first rigorous art historical study of the artist in English, Daniel Spaulding presents a striking new interpretation of Beuys’s work and career. By putting Beuys in the context of Germany’s postwar recovery, Spaulding shows that the artist’s superimposed biological, political, and economic metaphors offered a powerful way to think about the trajectory of human freedom, the place of art in capitalist modernity, and the possibility of an ecological aesthetics. At the same time, his oeuvre’s disquieting echoes of the Nazi past suggest that not everything could be reconciled in what Beuys called “social sculpture.”

''Duchamp-isms'' is a selection of illuminating quotations from Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968), one of the most important figures in the history of modern art. A painter, sculptor, writer, and chess player, Duchamp changed the very definition of art with his “readymades”—everyday objects such as a bicycle wheel or bottle rack that he titled, signed, and presented as art. He provoked critics and the public with works such as the Cubist-Futurist painting ''Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2'' (1912) and ''Fountain'' (1917), a readymade composed of a men’s urinal signed “R. Mutt.” Prizing the intellectual over the aesthetic, Duchamp inspired later movements like Minimalism, Conceptualism, and Pop Art. Delightful and witty, ''Duchamp-isms'' offers rich insights into the mind of a true icon of modern art.

''Ono-isms'' is a collection of provocative and powerful quotations from influential artist, musician, songwriter, and peace activist Yoko Ono, providing a richer understanding of this important cultural icon. Since emerging on the international art scene in the early 1960s, Ono has made profound contributions to visual and performance art, filmmaking, and music in work that often radically questions the division between art and the everyday. In recent years she has embraced social media to communicate her artistic and activist messages to even broader audiences around the world.

Résumé:
Curated and written by her great-nieces, who lived in the house throughout their lives, this book offers an unparalleled glimpse into Frida Kahlo, opening a new perspective into this iconic artist’s family home and refuge. Casa Kahlo was more than a second home—it was a place where Frida could truly be herself away from the house she shared with her husband, the artist Diego Rivera. At Casa Kahlo—surrounded by her artistic family and the vibrant Indigenous culture she immersed herself in—she spent time with her closest confidantes (her sisters), her friends, and her lovers. The house also served as an additional studio space for Kahlo where she taught art classes to a legion of loyal students who referred to themselves as Los Fridos. Remarkably, Casa Kahlo has been occupied by Frida’s family since they bought the house in 1930. Meticulously documenting the interiors, this book features a rich array of personal items and never-before-published letters and postcards to her sisters, her mother, and her most beloved niece Isolda. Hundreds of personal items offer an intimate view into her artistic environment and personal life: from her early drawings and paintings (including the first painting she showed Rivera at eighteen years old) to later drawings; her distinctive jewelry and clothing; key documents, including her birth and marriage certificates; artworks; and keepsakes ranging from dolls to her taxidermy butterfly collection.

Although highly regarded during his short life--and honored by artists and architects today--the American artist Gordon Matta-Clark (1943-78) has been largely ignored within the history of art. Matta-Clark is best remembered for site-specific projects known as "building cuts." Sculptural transformations of architecture produced through direct cuts into buildings scheduled for demolition, these works now exist only as sculptural fragments, photographs, and film and video documentations. Matta-Clark is also remembered as a catalytic force in the creation of SoHo in the early 1970s. Through loft activities, site projects at the exhibition space 112 Greene Street, and his work at the restaurant Food, he participated in the production of a new social and artistic space. In this first critical account of Matta-Clark's work, Lee considers it in the context of the art of the 1970s--particularly site-specific, conceptual, and minimalist practices--and its confrontation with issues of community, property, the alienation of urban space, the "right to the city," and the ideologies of progress that have defined modern building programs.
