Résumé:
Nick Haymes' photography often explores the artist's role in and relationship with his family. This first small monograph finds him traveling with an extended family of young skateboarders. Between Dog and Wolf depicts--beyond their adventures and misadventures on wheels--their joy in living, in making out and hanging out. Haymes, who was born in England in 1969, observes his young subjects with a mix of friendly and almost fatherly care, documenting a delicate stage of life with equal attention to its dark moments and its blissful ones, in a raw and distinctive style that looks exceptionally closely. The artist has lived in New York since 2000, where he has worked with many widely respected magazines including i-D, Dazed & Confused, The Face, Vogue, TeenVogue, Another Magazine, Arena, Capricious and The Journal.

Amsterdam-born photographer and filmmaker Ari Marcopoulos (1957) has become a familiar name to skaters and rockers, as well as to artists and international scenesters. Ad Rock is a concise portrait of Adam Horovitz from the Beastie Boys, filled with years of photographs of the musician at work, with his friends and at home. Following Marcopoulis' study of the internationally renowned snowboarder, Terje Haakonsen, it is the second in a series of portrait books that features subjects up close and unguarded, simply living their lives. Ari Marcopoulos has work in the current international traveling exhibition Beautiful Losers, and recently had solo exhibitions at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in California and P.S.1 in New York. His photographs are regularly featured in The New York Times Magazine.

Résumé:
Two materials co-exist at the heart of Dani Jakobs work: salt and silk. The artist paints and devises installations. The vibrantly coloured, abstractly geometric silk paintings that look like an "abstract model of the cranium" contrast with the amorphous salt pictures created using the chemical process of salt crystalisation and that are reminiscent of aerial photographs of distand lands and coastlines. She interlinks both of these opposites in spatially expansive floor paintings. Her "geometrical eye" places a landscape into a space, is derived from a lake of salt without perspective, an anti-space, a non-place, interlinks then, "draws lines, noting trajectories of movement", rhythmatises them arriving at a symmetry and creates a utopian space. "A land" that defies unequivocal decipherment. The artist book documents Dani Jakobs most recent works from 2005 to 2007 in 30 images with large illustrations and detailed views. These compositions enter into a conversation with a lyrical text by Klaus Theweleit, which was especially written for this book and runs all the way through it.

Résumé:
The Swiss collaborators Fischli & Weiss have said of this early series of color and black-and-white photographs, "Balance is most beautiful just shortly before it collapses." Indeed their tense arrangements of household miscellany often look on the verge of falling, or are caught in the process. The only texts included with them are associative titles, including Natural Grace, (a spatula on a plate on a wine bottle on an apple on a cup), The Fart (chairs on Coke bottles and aerosol cans), and Invisible Power, (showing one end of a paper construction held aloft by the breeze from a small fan). Many of the constructions appear under several titles, in several styles: Completion, when shot in grainy, starkly lit black-and-white, becomes Honor, Courage, Confidence, and in close-up, Can I , May I, Do Anything? On the page, these often elaborate and expansive objects acquire an incidental quality that makes them both more real and more transient. Ultimately, the only evidence of their existence is these images. While a small selection of these works appeared in the artist's book Quiet Afternoon, most have never before been published in any form.

"Given the fact that [they] had committed the entire building to me, it seemed obvious that I should display my presence from the outside. The display is a signal. It reveals itself progressively as the 200 lights come on, until all of them are ablaze."

Résumé:
In paintings, murals, and book illustrations, Aaron Douglas (1899–1979) produced the most powerful visual legacy of the Harlem Renaissance, prompting the philosopher and writer Alain Locke to dub him the “father of Black American art.” Presenting more than ninety illustrations of Douglas’s works and the commentary of leading critics and historians, this book focuses on the artist’s career from the 1920s through the 1940s in relation to American modernism. Its authors argue that Douglas’s bold work opened doors for African American artists in Harlem and beyond, and that it invited a dialogue with modernism that put African American life, labor, and freedom, along with African traditions and motifs, at its center. New information emerges from these pages, reflecting the rich interchange between the visual arts, music, dance, literature, and politics that shaped Douglas’s work and also defined the Harlem Renaissance.
