Par son plan et son architecture, elle est la préfiguration de la grande Sainte-Chapelle que saint Louis fera ensuite bâtir dans l'enceinte du Palais de la Cité, à Paris. En guise de clefs de voûtes, sept portraits réalistes de la famille du roi, disposés par ordre de préséance face au souverain. C'est dans la cette chapelle, construite près du château royal de Saint-Germain, que Baudoin II, empereur de Constantinople, remet à saint Louis, en 1238 les reliques de la Couronne d'épines du Christ. Ces reliques sont destinées à la Sainte-Chapelle de Paris qui ne sera consacrée qu'en avril 1248. Telle qu'elle est restituée aujourd'hui, la chapelle palatine est un fac-similé du XIIIe siècle d'une fiabilité parfaite, résultat d'une approche archéologique approfondie par Eugène Millet, l'architecte de la restauration du château à la fin du XIXe siècle.
