Résumé:
This wide-ranging book examines the world’s most significant large-scale housing complexes, which point the way for the future of housing design. The seventy residential complexes featured here are recognized as architectural milestones, embodying forward-thinking attitudes towards urban planning. This book chronicles the evolution of these structures, revealing how each best represented its era’s goals: housing a new society in the 1920s and 30s; the 40s and 50s’ leap toward functionality and the future; the high-density urban projects of the 60s and 70s; and diversity and environmental awareness in the 80s and 90s. It also looks at this century’s most progressive developments: Beijing’s Looped Hybrid, a city within a city; India’s Aranya township, which provides housing for impoverished residents; and the environmentally friendly Solaire Apartments in Manhattan, among others. As today’s cities face myriad global challenges, this book provides ample food for thought for anyone concerned with socially responsible architecture.

From the almshouses of seventeenth-century Puritans to the massive housing projects of the mid-twentieth century, the struggle over housing assistance in the United States has exposed a deep-seated ambivalence about the place of the urban poor. Lawrence J. Vale's groundbreaking book is both a comprehensive institutional history of public housing in Boston and a broader examination of the nature and extent of public obligation to house socially and economically marginal Americans during the past 350 years.

Résumé:
In the series ‘Generosity: Housing Design Strategies’, architectural projects identifying with specific design strategies are grouped into four sections: indeterminacy, exteriority, privacy, and interactivity. At the core of the series is the concept of generosity, an essential quality for the design of collective housing. Generosity transforms the condition of the built volume and makes it habitable, generating comfort, well-being, and much more. The second issue in the series focuses on the experience of exteriority, featuring work by Atelier Kempe Thill, Caruso St John Architects, Studio Woodroffe Papa, MVRDV, Henley Halebrown, Schneider Studer Primas, Vivas Arquitectos, and more.

Résumé:
Barcelona offers a prime example of the co-housing model as an asset prized for its use value as opposed to investment. This book is a compilation of cooperative housing projects in Barcelona, both complete and under construction. It explains how the co-housing process is managed in terms of architecture, urban planning, financing, legality, and taxation, and delves into the experience of living in a community fueled by a cooperative spirit. The content of the book presents designs for cooperative housing, accompanied by a critical vision of the model’s implications in terms of the transfer of use or co-living. Finished and inhabited projects are compiled along with ongoing projects, to offer a general view of this way of living in Barcelona. The case studies are explained by members of cooperatives, experts and designers who look at aspects of design, sustainability, construction and urban life. This book is a tool for understanding the design and construction of co-housing and the community life that goes on there.

Résumé:
The construction of domestic privacy has been a gradual process which has transformed the physical space. Perceptions of self and our relationship with the exterior have also shifted. The house is a protected environment which facilitates tranquillity, privacy, withdrawal, and concentration, away from the public realm. Finding thresholds to develop communication in the intermediate space, not entirely public but in fact a shared place of social encounters, remains a key issue for architects today. With contributions by Stephen Bates, Javier Mozas, and Aurora Fernádez, this volume dedicates itself to examining strategies in how privacy can be built in the collective housing environment.

Résumé:
With imaginative and hopeful methods to navigate counter to the mainstream, community architecture is an alternative built with basic means. It is appearing in numerous cities stressed by a turbulent market, where people are finding it increasingly difficult to access housing. How do we interact with others within habitable space, and how do we work towards a more sustainable and equitable future? This final issue of the series, dedicated to collective housing, tackles these questions and more. It includes twelve cooperative housing projects which respond to the four conditions that contribute to a design based on generosity: indeterminacy, exteriority, privacy, and interactivity.
