In this fourth volume, Atelier Bow-Wow delves into the window behavioural characteristics in nordic architecture, showing how climate and culture are strongly reflected in their windows. The works and influences of six architects are featured: Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz from Sweden, Alvar Aalto from Finland, and from Denmark, Kay Fisker, Arne Jacobsen and Jørn Utzon. After three years of research, the team visited about 235 works and measured 470 windows. 114 selected works are presented with photographs, detailed drawings, and analyses, examining the transformation of window technology and design, and the history and social issues of each country.

Cultural districts are playing a key cultural and social role throughout the world in the twenty-first century. They offer an incomparable density of art and culture and have a profound influence on the development of cities and regions. "World Culture Districts" presents the first-ever overview of this phenomenon, featuring fifteen of the most important cultural districts on six continents. The range of different kinds of cultural districts and their respective influence on space and society is revealed, and essays by international experts such as Gail Lord, Adrian Ellis, Matthias Sauerbruch and Louisa Hutton, Vitus H. Weh and Christian Strasser shed light on current issues surrounding their development and impact.

Résumé:
Over a period of three decades, from 1958 to 1988, the New South Wales Government Architect’s Office (GAO) in Australia realised nearly a thousand buildings across the state. This enormous production was the direct result of an ideological choice, one that involved a brutal commitment to building architecture that was merely adequate. In terms of scale and ambition, the GAO’s operation resembles the laying out of the Roman Empire. It built the infrastructure that holds the territory together, and in doing so literally constructed the state while obliterating the pre-existing country. Through numerous examples, this volume meticulously documents the phenomenon.

Résumé:
This book documents architectural installations developed by Philip Beesley and collaborators from 1995 through 2007. The collection includes architectural sculptures located in natural sites and works integrating kinetic components and interactive systems. Projects in the past several years have focused on immersive digitally fabricated lightweight ‘textile’ structures, and the most recent generations of his work feature responsive systems that use dense arrays of microprocessor, sensors and actuator systems. Includes essays by Jean Gagnon, Eric Haldenby, Christine Macy, Andrew Payne, Robert Pepperell, Michael Stacey and Charles Stankievech.

Résumé:
Through two critical contributions, this text looks at the evolution and roles that have been assumed today by the facade envelope in contemporary architectonic output. The ever-more radical separation between structure and shell entrusts to the latter the expressive and communicative functions of the building. This appears to represent a belated victory for that bekleidung prinzip - which, though first expressed a century ago, opened the discussion on an articulated and problematic phenomenon, whose basis we can investigate today with technical knowhow and new theoretical knowledge. The evolutionary dynamics of the processes of planning and building in architecture, external factors related to the marketplace and the production of new materials filled with untapped expressive potential, the increase in the demand for results and performance of the building system, all these have had their influence on the phenomenon.
